You can e-file any time now---IF all of your income has been entered and IF all of your forms are ready. The IRS will not begin to accept/reject returns until January 29, so if you e-file now it will just sit on a server waiting for the IRS to open.
Do not file a tax return without ALL of your income documents; you must include every 2023 W-2 on the same tax return. Employers have until the end of January to issue W-2’s. Wait until you have all of your W-2’s. Clients, schools, Social Security, healthcare.gov, banks, mortgage lenders, and other financial institutions may not have tax documents available until late January/early February. ALL of your tax documents must be entered on the same Form 1040; do not file unless you have entered everything.

No hurry to e-file since the IRS will not begin to accept/reject 2023 e-files until January 29. And….a state return cannot be accepted until after the IRS accepts your federal return.
If all the forms and schedules for the federal tax return have been finalized you can e-file the federal tax return now. And if all the forms and schedules for the state return have been finalized you can file the state return now.
The IRS will not officially start processing 2023 federal tax returns until January 29. 2024. State returns cannot be accepted by the state until the federal return has been accepted by the IRS.
I finished my return, purchased audit defense, tried to efile, and got a message telling me that I have to print my return and mail it in, the message states my return has forms that must be mailed for federal and state. I have changed no forms from last year, etc and always efiled, which is one reason I live turbo tax.
Is this because efile isn't available until 29 Jan when the IRS starts accepting returns?
if not due to the IRS not accepting until 29 Jan, how can I see which form is stopping it from being efile capable. I just don't have print capabilities to print, then mailing sucks compared to efile. I bought Turbo tax specifically for the capabilitie.to complete and efile?

I updated yesterday when I got an email from turbo tax, so mine is up to date.
Have others been able to go-ahead and use the efile feature?
I was reading that when you open up the view forms, and click on a form and change a number, that you cannot use efile, because you are overriding the step by step tool or entry method. That sounds crazy doesn't it? If that's the case I am better off to delete the files, and just restart turbo tax and open up my 2022 return to import into 2023, and then use the entire step by step feture or tool again.
If efile is working how can I find out which forms are stopping it from being efiled, if I have the same forms as last year, and could efile?
You cannot transfer 2022 into 2023 after you have entered any 2023 data. You would have to start over completely if you wanted to do that. And...you say you have already paid for an add-on, so then you will have a billing issue.

Thanks for the reply.
When I first start to do a 2023 return, it knows last year's data and I update/edit or delete it, and just answer the questions, I used visit all topics when answering the questions.
Do you know which forms could stop me from e-filing?
Thanks
@Retain29 No----we cannot see your tax return. We do not know what forms you need or what is stopping you. Again...click Review to see if some forms are missing. Or call support.
I will thank you. Keep smiling 😃
Everything should be entered in the step by step interview mode ... making direct changes or overrides in the FORMS mode will void the accuracy guarantee and can keep you from efiling. Go back and undo the change you made in the forms mode, go back to the interview and enter it there ... then check the REVIEW tab again.
Ok thank you for this answer.
Do you think I should open the files on my computer and delete the 2023 pdf tax file in turbo tax, then reopen turbo tax and do.the entire interview, step by step?
I created 3 different tax files under 1023, deleting some forms under the view form, just a to see if that would cause efile to not work. Example, I have a dividend for 21 cents and a capital chain of 20 cents, and since the standard deduction is the highest, I went into the forms and deleted 3 charitable deduction wksheets and/or forms.
I meant 2023,
I'm having the same issue with e-filing my Federal 2023 return.
What are the forms that can't be e-filed due to regulations.
Never encountered this problem in previous years of e-filing!!
