Reference 9021 is the IRS code for math errors.
This code means that the IRS has found a math error in your return and will adjust your refund (or tax due).
Since the TT program doesn't make math errors then this means you made a data entry error in the program ... the 2 most common ones this year would be what you entered for the advance stimulus payment or the advance child tax credit and the IRS disagrees with your entries. When the letter of explanation arrives you will know what it was that they changed.
So,
Can the changes be reversed there claiming things untrue for agi and dependent when I have neither a dependent or made over 75k
Did you receive a notice? If so, it may contain instructions for you to follow if you disagree with the changes. You can contact the IRS at the phone number listed on the notice. If you do not have the notice, please see How do I contact the Internal Revenue Service (IRS)? for more information, including the IRS phone number and hours of operation. You may want to try calling right when they open since they have been very busy throughout the day.
@Enragedprune22 I'm on the exact same situation. Did you get this resolved? What did they say?
Not yet 😕 like to hear from ya if u get it resolved I’m going to have to go into my federal tax office personally then I’ll message u back what I find
Did this ever get resolved? I am having the same issue. I qualified for the 3rd stimulus - I checked the IRS refund status - they changed the amount - with the reference code 9021. I'm just waiting on the letter to come in the mail.
If the IRS has reduced your refund, they will be sending you a communication explaining why they reduced the amount of your refund. Once you know the nature of the problem, you may be able to correct the problem by amending your 2021 Federal tax return.
If you did not receive $1,400 for the third stimulus payment, the IRS may think that you were already issued the third stimulus payment.
At your IRS online account, you can find whether a payment was issued to you that you did not receive. You can also find this information on your tax transcript.
If you need to trace a payment that the IRS says has been issued to you, mail or fax a completed IRS Form 3911, Taxpayer Statement Regarding Refund.
So I got this message too, and I’m really upset to say the least. Since the message wasn’t personalized to me: like they mentioned I made errors , which is not true. Or some child tax exempt thing- which I never checked that box. Or it was I’m not eligible for the rebate tAx stimulus money, which is false- I got a letter in January telling me I qualify for a $1400 recovery rebate. My tax return has to be one of rhe easiest returns to process. I have no kids , I don’t own a business or a house, I don’t have foreign bank accounts or earned money overseas. No military , no donations, I didn’t claim anything but the money I earned the tiny amount it was. I’m getting crooked here- and I’m going to get to the bottom of this.
Did you call their phone number - it’s only available m-f 7am - 7 or something. In my case they must of sent me the message overnight - real strange , cuz I was checking it once a day . And then I checked it today which is a Saturday and got the message- more strangeness. And they don’t work the weekends. It’s almost like they didn’t want me to get the message with time to immediately call them back- maybe not evil intent from IRS. There the ones with the errors. I’m kinda ticked off
I’m just real upset about this whole deal. It’s amazing I read during the pandemic Nigerian hackers were getting stimulus payments and they’re not living in the US. And I have the most basic not claiming anything extra on my tax return . Not sketchy one bit . And they can’t figure out that I didn’t receive the 3rd stimulus? I’m just flabbergasted; the IRS sent me a letter. in Jan. Telling me I qualify.
This kinda of stuff always happens to me - not this time I’m real upset and not going to take their crummy response.
I’d love to here what you get back so far nothing for me! Ya easiest tax return for a single male no kids ect ect
Check all stimuli in ur bank accounts see if they add up as well. Some ammo when u make ur claim
Did the letter in January tell you you received $1400? Read it closely. If it does then you need to trace the payment. I’ve had this problem with a few clients. The IRS letter number 6475 was sent to those who the IRS sent a payment to. They think you got the payment, but you never did. Trace the refund. Download form 3119 write Stimulus 2021at the top where they will see it. Fill out the rest and either fax or mail it in to trace the check or deposit the IRS sent. This way you get to the bottom of it.
