What does it mean to say "Sch SE-T Max deferral line 18 must be entered"?

"It's okay to delete forms..."
Apparently not though.
I just read another user who did that and she says she then was told by the system she needed to talk to one of the experts you have to pay!

Now the 2nd time thru I get the SAME error re line 18 and none of the solutions on this thread seem legit to me or that is, they seem to be illogical or else possibly wrong or possibly cause further problems with my return!

What does it mean to say "Sch SE-T Max deferral line 18 must be entered"?

Can you tell me (maybe in code like Hand Rb lo-ck for example) which service you used?

This was a night mare that cost me about 22 hours sitting in front of the computer! Doing taxes is bad enough but researching HOW to avoid a TT BUG /ERROR on top of just doing the taxes is UNACCEPTABLE!

Really sucks that they have not fixed this since 18 days ago (the 1st report about it I saw was Jan 30)!

I did get my Return to work and plan to submit it after having someone review what happened when I added $100k income then deleted it, still got Line 18 but changed it to $22 ... but got a REFUND... So...?

Anyway, this was a very very bad experience and I can understand that anyone can make a mistake! BUT, it's not cool to make one this big and then not even address it within 18 days! THAT's the part that makes me not want to use TT any more!

What does it mean to say "Sch SE-T Max deferral line 18 must be entered"?

But being accepted by TurboTax does NOT mean that it will be seen as CORRECT by the IRS, unfortunately. I am worried about this because I too messed around with Line 18 and got it to be accepted by TT with a REFUND... BUT... will the IRS say it's wrong?????

What does it mean to say "Sch SE-T Max deferral line 18 must be entered"?

Needing to add temporary fake income is a ridiculous workaround for a paid tax service.

Weird how you blame Turbotax when the forms were created by IRS. It seems like you know nothing about how the government and tax filing works.

What does it mean to say "Sch SE-T Max deferral line 18 must be entered"?

Yes. I guess you are right. That is why I have been paying for the service Turbo tax offer (because they are supposed to be a tax expert who can help me when this kind of difficulty comes up). Thank you for your opinion but you have missed my point.

What does it mean to say "Sch SE-T Max deferral line 18 must be entered"?

@taytay9700 With that snarky answer, it seems to be you that does not grasp the situation here. The whole point of paying for TurboTax is that it asks you questions in plain English so it can input into the forms for you. You do understand that TT does ask about deferring, right?  And that, even though the answer is no it still asks you to input into the form, right? This is the problem everyone has and also the TurboTax has been MIA and that we would like to file now but are not comfortable with the answers given.

What does it mean to say "Sch SE-T Max deferral line 18 must be entered"?

Exactly. I did say i do not want to defer. But it still asks you to fill out line 18 with some kind of number. It kept popping up to review, which is why I had to contact Turbo Tax specialist. If i had to do the research to fill that line myself, why am I even using a paid service from TT?? I paid $120 so I can use their expertise. That is where my frustration came from. Anyway, my return got accepted (WMR 1 bar) as of today. I keep my fingers crossed. I will put an update here on my return.

Has anyone figured out a solution to this problem? Does anyone know if TurboTax will be updating their system to eliminate this error?

*** UPDATE ***

So, I went ahead an risked just entering a "0" on line 18 as I did not want to defer paying my SE Taxes.  My tax refund amount was unaffected.

I filed Wednesday night and within an hour the FEDERAL filing was ACCEPTED. The next day my STATE was ACCEPTED.

It is not my advice if you're looking to sue me at a later day, but I do advise as someone who risked it - just enter 0 and go forth. Others have and had no issues and I can confirm I did the same and had no issues.

HOWEVER - when I went to e-file, I got a vague error saying some or all of my forms could not be e-filed with absolutely NO information on how to find out what forms they were. So I called and talked to Malichi, who was very helpful. It turns out TT also has a bug this year with their State e-filing.  I know it's a bug because I have never had an issue in over 15 years of using TT to file. Anyway, you have to delete your State, e-file the fed, then redo your state (hopefully everything updates properly or you have to re-enter it) and then e-file your state taxes. IT'S A PAIN IN THE A$$!

TT has been absolutely not worth it this year and based on all their issues - I will not be using them next season.

What does it mean to say "Sch SE-T Max deferral line 18 must be entered"?

@taytay9700  Turbo Tax creates this online software. Turbo Tax techs make it work or not work. Turbo Tax is 100% responsible for making it work for clients who are paying them to create it and manage it! The IRS has nothing to do with Turbo Tax. And for good reason, apparently!

What does it mean to say "Sch SE-T Max deferral line 18 must be entered"?

I'm with you. They've always been good but this is the kind of business that they just can't make this kind of mistake - and this is key: - NOT FIX IT IN THE AT LEAST 3 WEEKS people have been posting about it here and bringing it to their attention! THAT's the unacceptable part!

As to the "solution" the ONLY real solution is that TT GET THIS FIXED *NOW*!

I was in a hurry to file for personal reasons.
So therefore I risked using the "solution" that a couple people here have endorsed which is to create a new income stream of 100k: call it anything you want like "Temporary Fix For Turbo Tax BUG".
Then when it gives you the warning re error on Line 18, go back there and fill in the box with 75% of your income as it says.
Then go back and DELETE the new income.

For me that SEEMS to have solved it, and since the income is now deleted as I recall, I got a message saying "You are not eligible for Deferral".

Go back and read this thread as to how to exactly do it.
When I checked my finished taxes right before paying, I saw that the Form for Referral was not in my Return so I assume (?) all is well? But since it was jerry-rigged or mickey moused, Who Knows?

Do I like that I had to do this? NO! It cost me 20 hours of my time, all told: doing the taxes, trying to figure out the problem, using methods that did not solve it, trying a different method, coming back and forth to the forum... and now am WORRIED that it may cause an audit or more inspection of my Return....

But as I said, I needed to get my taxes filed quickly for personal reasons so I went along with this "mickey mouse" "fix".

If I had not been in a hurry I'd have gone to another Tax Service for sure, and next year I am NOT using Turbo Tax.

What does it mean to say "Sch SE-T Max deferral line 18 must be entered"?

@DawnC:

When I added the 100k income then later deleted it, I did not get the error re Line 18 BUT I did not get the Max Deferral form on my filed taxes either!

And if I understand what you said above, it has to be there! But it is not and I already filed because it went through!

See? This is why all these "mickey mouse" "MacGyver" type solutions are NOT the solution. The solution, the one that makes TT clients feel confident in them, is to FIX THE !!#!*^%&!!  BUG in their software!

I understand that you and others are giving advice that you think (or know?) is correct. But in the end if us non-tax experts do these "Workarounds", it does not give us confidence that our returns will be correct, accepted and NOT audited.

TurboTax has been derelict, I'd say even irresponsible in it's duty to fix a known bug in over 3 weeks! Nor post about a warning or workaround within the user interface!

TT should offer all of us who had this problem FREE SE Service next year! That's the ONLY way I am coming back here!

What does it mean to say "Sch SE-T Max deferral line 18 must be entered"?

I found this in another thread at (https://proconnect.intuit.com/community/proseries-tax-discussions/discussion/deferral-of-se-tax/00/1...) and it seems to have worked for me.

"OK, I see how to get rid of the deferral I think.  Putting 0 on Line 18 of that form isnt correct.

Go to the 1040/1040SR worksheet and scroll down to the Deferral for Certain Sch H and SE Filers smart worksheet looking box, Line 11 put a zero and nothing will flow to Sch 3 Line 12e.

If you do choose to defer, Im not seeing a spot on the Carryover worksheet for the deferred portion to carryover to 2021, so I dont think this part of the program is completely updated yet."
