If I have two states in Box 16, does the total amount should be the total in box 1 of the W2?

Box 16 reports the amount of taxable wages earned in a given state.  If you worked for the same employer in multiple states, there may be multiple entries.

It's possible that the total of Box 16 amounts don't equal Box 1.  States without an income tax don't always include amounts, and some states might display certain benefits in Box 16 that aren't shown in Box 1.
