Vehicle business % use is wrong

Hello,

Can anyone help with this? I traded in my car in 2022, and the depreciation deduction is calculated wrong by TurboTax. Business use % should be 89.9%, not 22.48%. Simple calculation, but TT does it wrong.

Thanks,

Paul

Go back through the interview, and when it asks if you kept track of personal miles say YES.

Hi, Sticman,

For us to best assist you with this, please reach out to a Tax Expert directly by either selecting the "Live Expert" button in the online app or calling 1-800-4INTUIT (1-800-446-8848).

That way a tax expert can look at your particular screen and the underlying data and get to the bottom of the issue.

Please select a thumbs up to cheer below if this helps.

Best,

Karen

Hi Karen,

Thanks for the response. I called TurboTax and talked to an "expert" who was no help at all, and eventually hung up on me. TurboTax seems to be getting the business use % wrong in 2022 (which it has never done in many years of my experience). Maybe this is because in 2022 the mileage rate changed halfway through the year, which had not happened before. Regardless, TurboTax has a bug and is getting this calculation wrong, and it needs to be fixed.

Any further help would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Paul

Hi, Sticman,

I am sorry to hear that happened and it would not have happened with most experts.  My suggestion is to reach back out, using the live expert button in the app (if available to you) and call again if not.  Start out by explaining to the expert that the last one cut you off and you want to make sure that you will get resolution. Ask for your case # right off the bat.  If you get cut off again, call back and ask for a a manager call back.

Intuit employs some amazing people, that I am proud to work with. However, you can get a dud anywhere. Be persistent.  The next person will hopefully get you there.

Best,

Karen

Your example shows a program error.  It is from the desktop version which does not include Live support.  It says it is dividing line 6 by line 5C.  But there is no Line 6.  This a programming error.  Where did you get this copy of TurboTax Home and Business for Windows?

This is either a programming error or it is a corrupted copy of TurboTax.  No phone support person can fix this.  You will either need to get a correct copy of the program of the error will need to be reported and corrected.

Thank you, @AmeliesUncle . Amazingly, that worked. Seems strange that switching that tick box would correct the calculation, but it did. I still believe it is a bug in the program that should be fixed, but I have what I need now.

Cheers,

Paul

I agree, it is a horrendously worded question that doesn't make sense unless you know what its purpose is.

The numbers you entered are for the partial year.  The question is TRYING to determine if it needs to prorate things over the entire year, rather than just the partial year.
