Urgent. Do I detach and mail out just the extension form 4868?

I have 2 extensions form 4868 to mail out. For me, I am expecting a refund, do I just mail out the small portion of the form 4868, that's all?

While my son has to make a payment, does he just detach and mail out the form 4868 portion together with the payment voucher, that's all?

Do we have to print out all pages of the form 1040 also?

I believe you are correct.

The instructions for form 4868 say to mail the form, and if you owe, send money.

See https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f4868.pdf

For you - mail only the form 4868.

For you son - mail the form 4868 plus a check.

To avoid confusion, I would suggest mailing them in separate envelopes.

You do not need to send your 1040 forms or any other documents.
