What if you don't know that person that claims you as a dependent. Is there a way to stop this person or not? Please let me know.
There is no legal way to stop someone from filing a tax return claiming you as a dependent. You can request a Identity Protection PIN from the IRS so anyone trying to file with your name and Social Security number will have their tax returns rejected by the IRS. Go to this IRS website for an IP PIN - https://www.irs.gov/identity-theft-fraud-scams/get-an-identity-protection-pin
If you’re under the age of 24 and a full-time student, your parents probably pay most of your basic living costs. If this is true, they can claim you as their dependent, even if you have a job.
What if I don't live with my parents anymore, and they are still trying to claim me as a dependent. Do they have the right to do that or not?
