Why am I being charged 80 dollars instead of the 40?

There is an extra $39.99 charge to have your fees deducted from your Federal refund. You can avoid that by paying with a credit or debit card.

Why am I being charged 80 dollars instead of the 40?

Not true. I paid with credit card and was still charged $80.

Then you were using the Deluxe online edition - $40 and you included a state tax return which is an additional $40

Why am I being charged 80 dollars instead of the 40?

Nope.  I was forced to pay for the smallest edition to even proceed which was $40 and then I had to pay an additional $40 to file. I don't have state taxes.  Apparently if you make more then 33k a year, you cant file for free.  I'm considering looking elsewhere or just doing it myself next year after 7 years of using TurboTax.

To pay $40 for the TurboTax account means you were using the Deluxe online edition since you could not use the Free online edition.  The Free online edition is for very simple tax returns and does not support tax data entered on any other IRS forms or schedules.

The other $40 (actually $39.99) was because you selected to have the TurboTax account fees paid from the federal tax refund.  This was totally optional and you could have removed that fee and paid only $40 for the Deluxe edition with a credit/debit card.

You keep saying that but its incorrect.  I tried both ways, with a credit card and having it deducted from my refund.  Both ways were charging me $40.  I understand the other $40, which is another issue I have because just because I have student loan interest I have to get the Deluxe.  That was new last year.  I feel your system is using some kind of trickery in the filing part because I'm pretty bright and savvy and like I said, I tried both ways and both ways wanted to charge me.  I think you should take my credit card info right now and give me back my $40!

If you were charged $40 then you are using the Deluxe online edition, Not the Free online edition.  If the total charge is $80 then you added a state tax return which is an additional charge of $40.  Or if you did not add a state return then you chose the option to have the TurboTax account fees paid from the federal tax refund, service charge for that option is $39.99

If you are eligible you can use the TurboTax Free File Program which is free to file both a federal and state tax return. The Free File Program edition is a full featured personal tax program and on a separate website from the TurboTax online editions.

To qualify for free 2019 federal and state tax returns with the Free File Program, you'll need to meet at least one of these requirements:

  • A maximum 2019 adjusted gross income (AGI) of $36,000; or
  • You qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC); or
  • You served as active duty military (including Reservists and National Guard) with a maximum 2019 AGI of $69,000 (you'll also need a military-issued W-2).

Does it appear you are being billed twice or are you seeing a double charge? This may be a temporary authorization that typically goes away within 24-72 hours, depending on your financial institution.

If this is not the case and you are being charged for different services provided by TurboTax, you can review the fees you are being charged for.
