Sounds like you need legal advice from your own divorce attorney.   Independent contractors pay self-employment tax for Social Security and Medicare---about 15.3%.    And the person who pays the contractor uses the amount they paid to the contractor as a deduction.    Claiming that a divorce settlement is payment as an independent contractor would be fraudulent.
