"Form 8949 (Sales and Other Dispositions of Capital Assets) records the details of your capital asset (investment) sales or exchanges.

Part I of the 8949 shows the short-term transactions (held less than a year) and Part II has the long-term transactions.

When you enter investment sales or exchanges from Form 1099-B or 1099-S in TurboTax, we'll automatically fill out Form 8949 and transfer the info to Schedule D.

You don't need to fill out the 8949 yourself.

See this article for more information about when you need to fill out or mail in Form 8949."

Thank you for your response. Regarding your statement, "When you enter investment sales or exchanges from Form 1099-B or 1099-S in TurboTax, we’ll automatically fill out Form 8949 and transfer the info to Schedule D. You don't need to fill out Form 8949 yourself," I’m unsure where to enter the investment sales or exchanges in TurboTax.

This relates to my 2022 tax return, as I received this letter from the IRS. I can’t find where to input this information in TurboTax in order for you to automatically fill out Form 8949 for me. For the 2022 tax return, I only see the final tax return, and I’m not sure where to access this section to enter the information.

Could you please provide clear instructions and steps on how to locate this section in TurboTax?

Thanks for your help!

To clarify further, since I’ve already filed my 2022 return, I no longer have access to modify or amend anything. The only option available is to download the 2022 tax return, and nothing else.

To report 1099-INT, 1099-DIV, or 1099-B info into TurboTax, go to Wages & Income > Interest & Dividends OR Investments.

If you have the 2022 TurboTax Desktop program on your computer, you can open it to enter this info in the Step-by-Step mode of your return (save a copy of your originally filed return), then go to FORMS at the upper right to 'Open Form' and view Form 8949.

If the IRS letter does not ask you to Amend your return, you could print just Form 8949 for them.  If it does, here's more info on How to Amend a Tax Return.

If you filed your 2022 return using TurboTax Online, here's How to Access a Prior Year Return.  Enter the financial transactions, and use Print Center in the left-side menu to access Form 8949.

Or, you can download the desktop version and transfer your online return into it if you want direct access to the forms.

Here's How to Transfer from TurboTax Online to TurboTax Desktop.
