I, too, have been using TT for decades. This is the first time I've experienced a glitch, and boy is it a doozy. I paid my taxes with my extension, but now cannot file because the .tax2023 file is gone. The only thing I got from TT is an abatement form which basically asks the IRS to not penalize me for a late return. And since mine is a home/business return it's a bit complicated. This feels like malpractice. "Let us help you complete your taxes (for a fee)" and then they delete the tax files! I plan to talk to a lawyer about a possible class action lawsuit.
On Windows or Mac?
Did you search your whole computer for all files ending in .tax2023 etc?And check the recycle bin and your backups. Check in One Drive, Drop Box, etc. It should be in your Documents then in the Turbo Tax folder. Also if you have multiple Windows user accounts, log into each one and do the search for the *.tax2023 data file from within each one and checking the Recycle Bin in each one.
If you don't have the main .tax file you might have one that starts with a Tilde sign ~ like "~your name.tax2023". That file is if your computer crashes or your real file gets lost or deleted or corrupt so you can restore it.
Don't know if this will help any Turbo Tax users but one Quicken user found them......
What I found was that my Quicken Data files ended up in the One-drive Recycle bin. Not sure how, but I found them there. I placed the files back onto the laptop and brought the files into Quicken and now have all my data back.
This is INSANE I have been using TT for 30 years and now when I open 2023.tx I shows ALL 000000 ALL MY VALUES ARE GONE. I have complicated taxes so what do I do? Re enter everything? and hope that it matches to the penny????
I called support and noone was able to help me. Bogus things and they kept me on the phone for over 5 hours for what? the first agent was totally ignorant of ANYTHING about tt... the second was helpful but on the wrong track. I do believe it was the tt update which messed us up. I will never use TT again after this and it s lack of concern and support.
Are you trying to transfer your 2023 return into 2024? If so, here's detailed instructions for Transferring a Prior Year Return.
If you're trying to open a .tax2023 file without being in the 2023 TurboTax program, you might not see the data properly.
You can also transfer from a PDF copy of your 2023 return, as outlined in the link above.
If you can't resolve your issue, please let us know and we'll try to help further.
Did you ever contact a lawyer? I am looking into this as well. Same exact
problem.
That remains a possibility. However, I have always observed that companies that lose their way, pursuing only profit instead of serving their customers, eventually implode. That's enough for me at this time.
A company that gaslights us and refuses to apologize or offer compensation is not serving customers.
The link to your article is dead. Another dead end on this issue. Turbotax remains officially silent on who knows how many people's tax forms that were disappeared. This is a colossal issue for a large number of users. I am researching other tax software for next season.
The same thing happened to me. I've been trying to figure out what happened to 2023 returns for days ... I'll try the suggestions here
Yes my 2023 files are missing as well. Has anyone from TurboTax responded?
When I click that link the page is not found
Have you tried the steps in the link provided by JotikaT2 above? This is the step by step on how to find your tax file. I have attached the link below for your reference:
I did try what is suggested here but there are no files found from turbotax 2023. It shows prior years but 2023 is missing
@ree714a Could you have used a different computer or used the Online web version for 2023? Are you on Windows or Mac?
Here's an idea. Do you still have 2023 installed? Try opening 2023 program and see if you can get your 2023 return to show up in it. Go to FILE - OPEN. And see if that is the right one.
In the 2023 program do a File-Save AS and give it a easy name you can find or search for. And note where it saves it or select where to save it so you can find it again. The file will end in .tax2023. Then close the 2023 program. Then start a new 2024 return and transfer from the 2023 file.
Are you on Windows 10? That can move files to different spots like to One Drive. Or to Drop Box. Could it be under a different user on your computer?

Another user said……Some people have discovered their files were under their administrator username. They didn't remember that they had to log in with administrator privileges at some point when installing the desktop version, so they started their returns and saved them while using their admin user account. (In this case, people were returning and logging into their usual, non-admin user account, not realizing what happened and not finding their files under their primary "user".)
My 2024 tax files disappeared today during an upgrade. It's still happening
I'm sorry volvogirl, but your suggestions read like a wild goose chase. Simple question for Turbotax: why would it be necessary to search under every rug, using tricks, when it's a simple matter for a supposedly sophisticated software company like TT to maintain the security of our critical tax data?
