Student Info Worksheet not reflecting ESA distributions

I entered my child's 1099Q and 1098T into TurboTax. The 1099Q had ESA distributions and the 1098T showed payments and scholarships. When I look at the student info worksheet, it reflects zero ESA distributions. Why is that?

Enter the 1099-Q before making entries in the Education section.

If the 1099-Q distribution was used for Qualified Education Expenses, you don't have to enter it in your return.

Click this link for more info on 1099-Q.

If the 1098-T does not qualify you for an Education Credit (Box 1 larger than Box 5) you don't need to enter it in your return either.

This link gives info about the 1098-T.

Since we can't see your return in this forum, you may want to revisit the Education section again to check your entries (if you use TurboTax Desktop you can make entries directly on the forms).

Student Info Worksheet not reflecting ESA distributions

Hi, I did it in that order. When I go to the Student Info Worksheet, for line 1 of Part IX ESA, it shows a zero for Total ESA distributions from Form 1099Q. And the top right part of the screen says that the field is a calculated field (not user entered). So, why, when I enter an ESA distribution in the 1099Q entry, does Turbotax Desktop show a calculated value of zero?

I know I have enough qualified expenses that I don't have to enter them (1099Q, 1098T) into TurboTax, but the engineer in me wants the program to handle the situation so that if I ever get to a point where I don't have enough qualified expenses, it handles the distributions accurately.

You might want somebody to look at your return.

I would suggest you consider our new product / features TurboTaxLive to file your 2019 taxes.  This way you could have one of our tax professionals to review your tax forms.

To reach one of our tax professionals, in the TurboTax program, once you complete your taxes, before you file, you’ll be given the option for a final review of your return by one of our experts.  After they completed reviewing your return, they’ll inform you of any proposed changes.
