My sons father claimed out son on his 2018 and 2019 returns. He received our sons portion of both the stimulus checks. $500.00 and $600.00. I'm working on my 2020 taxes and I am claiming our son for this tax period. I get to the the stimulus recovery part and it ask me how much I received for both checks which I put in the amount I received. However, it s trying to give me the credit for our son, which is not right because I know my son has already been accounting for.
Shall I add to the recovery amounts that i reporting that I received so that I don't get the extra money for our son? I don't want to claim it and my taxes get held up because of it.

The Recovery Rebate Credit is based solely on information in your tax year 2020 return. The stimulus payments in rounds one and two were based on prior year returns. If someone received a stimulus payment for a dependent claimed on a prior year return that was correct for those payments. You should complete your tax year 2020 return with your current information to correctly calculate the Recovery Rebate Credit for you.
