Son amended his return to change to dependent and it was accepted. Mine still getting rejected.

Hi. My four year old son's return accidentally had him as an independent. It was accepted by FED/NY/NJ.

We amended two days ago to fix it to DEPENDENT status and it was accepted by FED.

When I try to file my taxes (which has him as a dependent) it keeps REJECTING my federal saying my son's SSN has him as an independent still.

Does it take extra time? should i call the IRS? I am afraid the tax deadline is coming up soon and it won't have enough time for my son's SSN to go to the correct status in their database even though his AMENDED tax return was accepted.

The IRS will not remove his status in their database even after the amended return has been processed.  We see this occur thousands of times each tax year where the dependent did not correctly enter their dependency status on their tax return resulting in the parent's having to mail their tax returns.

You will have to print and mail your 2022 tax return keeping him as a dependent on the return.

Q. Does it take extra time?

A. Yes.

You will not be able to e-file before April 17. You will have to mail in your return this year.  Theoretically, you could file an extension and e-file later. But, from a practical matter, you're never informed when his amended return has been fully processed. So, you won't know when to e-file.

@Hal_Al @DoninGA thanks both. my NJ and NY state returns were automatically rejected too because my federal one was rejected. does this mean i'll have to mail all three in? no way just submit the states through e-file right?

Yes, you will also have to print and mail the state tax returns.  A state tax return cannot be e-filed using TurboTax if the federal tax return has not been e-filed and Accepted by the IRS.

ah. many thanks. this is gonna suck. the return is more than 50 pages!

@chanpion13 You will not be mailing fifty pages.  When you choose to print to file by mail, it will print out only the pages needed to send in to the IRS.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses.  Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.
