I had an error IND996 requiring getting new IRS ID Pin; however, the 2023 Turbo Tax Deluxe does not allow six-digits (only five-digits) with an error message "invalid character or too many characters". This occurs just prior to finalizing the E-submittal.
You'll need to sign in or create an account to connect with an expert.
E-file reject IND-996: The Dependent/Qualifying Person Identity Protection Personal Identification Number (IP PIN) provided on the return is not valid.
So are you needing to enter a dependent's IP PIN?
You are entering it in the wrong section.
The 5-digit PIN is a signing PIN where you make up your own 5 digits, as it indicates on the screen. The 5-digit PIN along with today's date and your birthdate is how one signs the return.
A 6-digit IP PIN is not entered in the FILE section. It is entered in a completely different section.
In the top right corner, click the Search icon (magnifying glass).
In the search line enter IP PIN without quotes (do not choose anything from the dropdown menu as you are entering it) and click the adjacent magnifying glass.
Then you should see a link to Jump to IP Pin.
I don't know which product you are using. The instructions I provided above to get to the IP PIN entry are for ONLINE TurboTax. If you're using desktop software (CD/download), the search mechanism is similar but can vary a bit.
There are other ways to navigate to it. If you have the desktop product and have trouble getting to it, post back, and we can tell you how to navigate to it in the desktop product.
Thank you. Someone else also advised me similarly but I could not find the location to go to, so I went through the entire tax form and found it in the FEDERAL TAXES SECTION, under "Other Tax Situations" and scrolled down to "Other Return Info" where there it was "Identify protection PIN". It asked for Pins of the filers and other qualified dependents.
Paid the price of three rejections, but I was adamant that I would not mail in my return like last year.
Great, i find this out on April 15th. Is Intuit going to pay late fees for people that purchased Deluxe version and not able to complete their returns?
what problem are you having - you should be able to input your 6-digit IRS ID Pin under Other Tax Situations regardless of version
Are you required to file using an IRS IP PIN because of identity theft? If so, you would have received a letter from them, or here's How to Find Your IP PIN.
If this doesn't apply to you, to Efile, you can enter a 5-digit PIN of your choosing, OR your AGI from last year. Here's How to Find Last Year's AGI.
