Paying fees to turbo tac

Enlisted military folks can prepare and file free if you add no extras, but you have added-on a feature that upgraded you to the most expensive of the TurboTax products--Live Self-Employed--by adding the Live feature, which allows for live on-demand help from a CPA/EA tax expert and a review of your return prior to filing.

You can remove that Live feature if you don't want it, then you'll be back in regular Self-Employed edition, which should be free for enlisted military.  I assume you entered your military W-2 and answered the question about your rank, etc.

@christianchilder

See the info I left you above about your situation, and how to get your free military discount if you are an enlisted personnel.

If you are an officer, there's still a way you may be able to file for free using the other free product--the TurboTax IRS Free File Program--if you qualify.   Actually, any military (enlisted and officers) are eligible for that product, since it's not based on rank.    You would have to meet just ONE of these qualifications:

      • Your 2019 AGI is $36,000 or less (for Married Filing Jointly returns, combined AGI of both spouses cannot be over that limit),  or
      • You qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC); or
      • In 2019, you served as active duty military (including Reservists and National Guard) with a maximum AGI of $69,000, and you have a military-issued W-2.
