My NJ 1040 keeps giving me error message referring me back to line 39b county muni code although the correct code is there. How can I fix it?

Please clarify your question. You mentioned line 39b, but there is no line 39b on Form NJ-1040. The county/municipality code is on line 38c, which you also mentioned. Is that the line that you are getting a message about?

What is the exact message that you are getting? Please post the entire message, word for word.

What is the code on Form NJ-1040 line 38c?

I am getting the same issue for my 2020 NJ taxes.

in the 2020 taxes, the lines are 39b and 39c on form NJ-1040 P2

TurboTax filled in 39a with the value of my paid real estate tax, and line 39d has 'homeowner' marked.

( see attachment )

This appears when I do the final review before filing my taxes.

also notice there is an error in the error message.

The error message says 38c, but points to 39c ( there is no 38c in the NJ form for 2020 )

after a little more thought, it seems that MY problem

was caused by answering the attached question incorrectly.

I originally said ' no ' when the correct answer is actually 'yes' ( for me )

After I fixed this, the final review found no errors.

I am having a similar issue. On the screen shot she shared I entered my correct lot, and block number as well as county municipality code BUT it keeps taking me back saying it is incorrect. Not sure why! Please help

So, tell us - did you answer the "Eligibility - Property Tax Deduction or Credit" screen correctly

as shown in the above posts ?

please provide your answers to each bullet, and the final answer that you provided to Turbotax.

Without this level of detail, we can only guess at your trouble.

Remember that the last bullet has an 'or' in it. This is the item that initially caused my own confusion...

For 2021 Tax Year: This issue (see above) seems to be related to the "Property Tax Information Worksheet", Question D. This question, for NJ purposes is ONLY related to ELIGIBILITY to file for the Homestead Rebate - which is completely separate from filing your NJ tax return. The key part of the question is related to owning the NJ home as of October 1st of the latest tax year. This tells NJ whether they should mail you a rebate application form. HOWEVER, TurboTax seems to think that if you answer No to this question, then you should not be entering Property Tax data, which is not true! In my case, I owned an NJ home in 2021, but sold it prior to October 1st. So, I have to answer No to "Property Tax Information Worksheet", Question D, but in order to claim the Property Tax Deduction on Line 40, you MUST enter the data into lines 39b and 39c...... Below is NJ Instructions for 39b and c:

"If you were not a homeowner on October 31, enter the information for the last home you owned and occupied in New Jersey during the year."

This is a bug. There should not be a conditional check for "Property Tax Information Worksheet", Question D. The software code statement [if "D" = No ,then 39b and 39c must be blank] is WRONG and should be removed from the code.

How do we get the developers to look at this? If I answer "Property Tax Information Worksheet", Question D as Yes, then it will disqualify the person I sold my home to from applying for the 2021 Property Tax Rebate.

Thank you for your feedback on this issue. I would like to take a deeper look at this. However, I need a diagnostic file which is a copy of your tax return that has all of your personal information removed. You can send one to us by following the directions below:

TurboTax Desktop/Download Versions:

  1. Open your return.
  2. Click the Online tab in the black bar across the top of TurboTax and select “Send Tax File to Agent
  3. This will generate a message that a diagnostic copy will be created.  Click on OK and the tax file will be sanitized and transmitted to us.
  4. Please provide the Token Number that was generated in the response.

TurboTax Online:

  1. Sign in to your online account.
  2. Locate the Tax Tools on the left-hand side of the screen.
  3. A drop-down will appear. Select Tools
  4. On the pop-up screen, click on “Share my file with agent.”
  5. This will generate a message that a diagnostic file gets sanitized and transmitted to us.
  6. Please provide the Token Number that was generated in the response.

To clarify a bit further, can you please share what version of TurboTax you are using -- one of the CD/downloaded versions or TurboTax Online?  Also, are you in Deluxe, Premier, etc.

After examining the file you shared in more detail, I was unable to determine exactly where the yes or no answer is provided to question D of the Property Tax Information Smart Worksheet.  This question seemed to only be accessible using Forms Mode or during the error check process, but not during the step-by-step data entry of your information.  Did you perhaps access question D using one of those methods?

It is understandable that you want to submit the most accurate return possible without affecting the person who purchased your property.  However, there is a message that appears on the screen in TurboTax stating that the Homestead Rebate process has changed and data is no longer collected with your tax return for the Homestead Rebate Application.   For this reason, question D defaults to a 'yes' in every return so that the property details may be entered for you to claim the property tax deduction.  Leaving it as a 'yes' should not cause any issues and will resolve any errors you may encounter asking that property details be left blank.

Any chance someone can look into the errors that EVERYONE in NJ is now getting re NJ-BUS-2 form as of today's software update? I am not required to file this form (I do not have a loss, nor a carry-forward loss, and my NJ Line 62 is blank), yet TT will not allow me to file electronically due to " "returns with pass through business alternative income tax credits are not eligible for electronic filing" "

This solved my issue of TurboTax always flagging errors regarding those entries for Block/Lot/Municipal code in NJ-1040 (for 2021 tax year).
