When did you prepare the 2017 return--and what software did you use? You say the e-file was rejected.....online preparation and e-filing has been permanently closed for a 2017 return since October of 2018. The current online software is ONLY for a 2019 return--no other year. If you used that program for your 2017 return you made a big mistake.
Any return you mailed during the past several months is presently sitting in a trailer, until the IRS can start opening its mail. So even if you correctly used the 2017 software that you should have used for the return, you will not hear anything about it for some time. They will not put anything on the IRS refund site about a 2017 return. They only put information for the current tax filing year--2019, So--unless you mailed it with tracking so you could know that it was received, you will not know until you either get a refund or until you receive a letter from the IRS.
If you did use the wrong software, here is how you can correctly prepare and file a 2017 return:
Online preparation and e-filing for 2016, 2017 and 2018 is permanently closed.
To file a return for a prior tax year
If you need to prepare a return for 2016, 2017, or 2018 you can purchase and download desktop software to do it, then print, sign, and mail the return(s)
https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/past-years-products/
You may also want to explore purchasing the software from various retailers such as Amazon, Costco, Best Buy, Walmart, Sam’s, etc.
Remember to prepare your state return as well—if you live in a state that has a state income tax.
When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s. Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.
Note: The desktop software you need to prepare the prior year return must be installed/downloaded to a full PC or Mac. It cannot be used on a mobile device.
If you are getting a refund, there is not a penalty for filing past the deadline. If you owe taxes, the interest/penalties will be calculated by the IRS based on how much you owe and when they receive your return and payment. The IRS will bill you for this; it will not be calculated by TurboTax.
I'd originally filed online in April of 2018 for my 2017 taxes, and they were rejected because I signed the wrong line. (Signed on the line that states you are preparing for someone else, as opposed to preparing my taxes myself).
I mailed a corrected copy of my taxes in May 2018. Trying to (2 years late) determine where I can find what the status is.
@prb2662 You mailed that two years ago? Only the IRS can tell you. But unfortunately, they are not answering the phone for calls about things like that right now. If after two years you have not heard anything, and you did not use tracking back then to make sure you knew they received it, it is likely it did not make it to the IRS. If you want to try printing and mailing it again, you can--but expect a long wait. Mailed returns are piling up in trailers and no one knows yet when the IRS will get to the backlog.
