My California e-file is rejected

My California e-file is rejected for the following reason:

/CA-Return/CA-ReturnData/CAForm540ScheduleCA/IncomeAdjSchedule/Income/FederalAmounts/OtherIncomeAdditionalItems - Data in the return is missing or invalid. Please double check your entries.

I checked Section C - Adjustment to Income in Form 540 and all fields are empty.

All fields in Part 1 Additional Income in Schedule 1 of Form 1040 are either empty or zeros.

Does anyone have the same issue? How can I resolve it?

My California e-file is rejected

Ours was rejected with the exact same error, even though I've checked it against previous years that were accepted without issue.

I'm wondering: Do you have an entry on line 8z ("Other Income: List type and amount") of Section B of Schedule CA (540): California Adjustments? We do, but TurboTax is leaving the description of that addition blank, even though it's supposed to either state what the addition is for (if it's a single thing) or say "See Stmt" (if it's multiple things). Our federal return was accepted, and TurboTax did put "See Stmt" on our federal return.

My theory: In previous years, the adjustment comparable to this year's 8z was included as part of a total of multiple possible sources of income, so if the "Other" description was left blank it  previously wouldn't be an automatic flag. This year, line 8z is separated by itself, so I wonder if a blank description of the income on line 8z is an automatic rejection by the system.

I'm tempted to print the return and write "See Stmt" myself and see if it's accepted. (It's not a form that I can find any way to access and override the entry--I can change it in the worksheets, but it doesn't change the info in the form that's filed.)

Don't know for sure if that's the issue, but it seems...plausible? What I do know is it's definitely frustrating.

@entiesIt does! And the really strange part is that I compared the new Schedule CA with the previous Schedule CA...and they were exactly the same in all fields, so I guess somehow the software was transmitting different information than what it was saving in the pdf? That's a little concerning to think about. I think this has been my last year using TurboTax. If I can't be positive it's transmitting the information it's showing me on the screen, I just don't think it's worth the risk in the future.

How'd it work for you?

I'm getting same error... Have you been able to resolve?

My California e-file is rejected

No, I haven’t. I talked to two Turbotax specialists over the phone and went through all State tax items but still state e-file fails. I asked for a refund and mailed my state tax return.
Have you put 1099-K from ebay or PayPal into Turbotax? I’m guessing my 1099-K from ebay is the root cause because that’s the only difference over my 2020 tax return. I sold my unused house hold items at ebay last year.

No.... I did not have a 1099K... I've been on the phone with 3 different people and no one can tell me what the specific error is.

My state return got rejected as well, and your theory sounds reasonable to me as I have an amount in 8z and the statement is blank. Did you get your state return fixed and rejected finally?

My California e-file is rejected

I'm glad that sounds possible to someone else! I'm hoping to get to our return again this week, but I figure I'll have to print it and mail it, so who knows how long it would be before I know if it's actually accepted...

@enties, have you had any luck figuring it out?

My California e-file is rejected

@nscott82

My case is similar to yours. My schedule 1 (Form 1040) has 'See Stmt' in description of entry z of Part I Additional Income which is corresponding to entry on line 8z of Section B of Schedule CA (540). But 8z description in Schedule CA (540) is empty. In my case, the other income is from 1099-K of which balance is 0. That's the only difference over 2020 tax return. I'm also guessing that's the cause of the error but I mailed my state tax return without any modification. Let's see CA accepts my tax return and Turbotax refunds my state e-filing fee.

Funny thing is it turns out the 1099-K from eBay is their mistake. eBay should not send me 1099-K because I'm not eligible. I received a mail about that from eBay YESTERDAY.

My return was also rejected and the only item that appears missing is a description on Line 8z.  I drilled down in Turbo Tax and the description is populated and I added another line without a period and slash to see if that would help. But the description doesn't display in the PDF before or after filing. Next time I may try to remove the characters from the description entered in the federal return section (where it comes from).  But, this doesn't seem to fix the problem everyone else is having that it doesn't display in PDF, therefore, probably doesn't get transmitted?

@enties Of course you got the correction from Ebay right after you printed and mailed your return! Shoot. Thanks for the update. That 8z omission does seem to be the common denominator here. Here's hoping it goes through. I'm (hopefully) mailing ours later this week.

My California e-file is rejected

Someone just pointed out in another thread (State return denied, page 4) that the desktop version is now saying that the 3/31 update will fix this error. I just checked mine, and it now says the same thing. Here's hoping!

...and my theory fell apart. Someone with a different desktop version actually did have a description included for line 8z, and it was still rejected. Oh well. It will be interesting to compare my current pdf with what's produced after the update.

My California e-file is rejected

@nscott82  I wonder you have tried 3/31 update. Does it resolve the error?

@nscott82Thank you so much for the update! It's obvious that Turbotax has a software bug. Very disappointing they fixed it at the end of March.

I mailed my state tax return on 3/24, so I won't try e-filing. I haven't received either state tax return or refund on e-filing fee yet :(  It's good to hear that there is no difference in PDFs which means my state tax return should be okay. You make me feel easy. And I agree with you. It's not worth to try Turbotax next year. Even though we pay for their software, users have to get together and find solutions. Turbotax support team is no use. I don't think I'll use Turbotax next year.

Thanks again. Your analytic approach is excellent!
