hello Experts,
My college son, sophomore in college, received a money network visa card. He has not filed his own taxes yet. He is still under our taxes. Why would he get this card? It seems it comes from the IRS. But, I am unclear.
He has not activate it yet because we have concerns.
Is this scam? Who issues these cards? why would he get it if he has not file his own taxes yet.
Thanks for your help
Regards,
Jorge

isn't there a phone number on the back of the card?
separately, if your son works at all that would not be reported on your tax return, even though you can still claim him on your tax return. He may not be required to file, but some parents get confused that they don't report their child's earning, even though they are still eligible to claim the student.
Could this be a EIP card for the stimulus payments? The EIP card uses Money Network but a welcome packet would also have been sent if it was for EIP.
Thank you...
There is a phone number to activate it
[phone number removed]
website: moneynetwork.com
Seems to be from Money Network Financial, LLC.
My questions: does this come from the gov? or is it advanced marketing from the LLC company?
thx again
Thank you.
The letter does mention EIP stimulus payment.
Why would he get it though? He / we have not apply for any assistance.
The Economic Impact Payments (stimulus funds) were sent out by the US Government in 2020 and 2021 to all eligible tax filers. However, dependents were not eligible to receive the payments.
Did you claim your son as a dependent on your 2020 and 2021 federal tax returns? If so, then the card was probably issued to him in error.
Thank you
I did claim him as a dependent for 2020, 2021 and 2022.
He got the card in 2023.
So, if it was sent to him by mistake, should he activate it or not?
You should call this number for assistance 1.800.240.8100
This is the website for the EIP card - https://www.eipcard.com/contact/
@enaudij0117 - call the number on the back of the card and put in dummy activation numbers, hopefully that will force the call to a live person - ask them -
is it from your state? kinda late to be getting EIP payments now that were issued so long ago.
Also, look as your son's transcript on IRS.gov - there will be a transaction on that transcript - check 2020 and 2021 tax years if that is what this card is.
Is it from California? They sent out a Money Network card. Here is info on it and who is eligible, etc. for the CA Middle Class Tax Refund. By the way it is not taxable.

thank you all...
I will call the number and see if I can speak to someone...
Thank you for all your help
