And then you manually changed the value(s) to 6 a correct 6 digit IP PIN?
And that worked, i.e. the feds accepted it?
So I have to have the IRS reject my tax filing ?
And then I can correct it?

If you have a 6 digit PIN issued to you by the IRS you need to enter it in order to e-file. Go to Federal>Other Tax Situations>Other Return Info>Identity Protection PIN and enter the six-digit PIN.
Not true. I used the exact same pin as last year, and my return was rejected because of the PIN.
@hammermulk If you need a 6 digit PIN you need a new one each year.

Whats the deal, this caused my return to be rejected, as all the numbers were not there.
The IP Pin will change each and every year. This is an Identity Protection Pin.
