I need to file state tax extension for 2020

You may only need a federal extension - many, but not all, states consider a timely-filed federal request for extension to meet their state extension requirement.

See 1040 States: Extension overview for a detailed list.

I need to file state tax extension for 2020

The link provides a fine state-by-state list, however I note that it doesn't quite cover the requirements.  Here is the text from the GA extension.  It is important that recognize that these are going to be the same for any state that accepts the federal extension as a state extension.

"A FEDERAL EXTENSION WILL BE ACCEPTED AS A GEORGIA EXTENSION IF: (1) THE RETURN IS RECEIVED WITHIN THE TIME AS EXTENDED BY THE INTERNAL REVENUE SERVICE, AND (2) A COPY OF THE FEDERAL EXTENSION(S) IS ATTACHED TO THE RETURN WHEN FILED.  NOTE: THERE IS NO EXTENSION FOR PAYMENT OF TAX, INCOME TAX OR CORPORATE NET WORTH TAX MUST BE PAID BY THE PRESCRIBED DUE DATE TO AVOID THE ASSESSMENT OF LATE PAYMENT PENALTIES AND INTEREST."

#1 There is no extension for payment (you can always pay more than you think you will owe and get a refund when you file).

#2 To be considered "timely" don't miss the due date on the extension.  Then you will be penalized for more late months.

#3 Include the federal extension form as sent to the IRS.  Yes, the states can tell if you created one after the face and send it.

The penalty and late fees for non-payment of owed taxes is significantly more than a late filing penalty.  That is, if it is a time issue and not a money issue, you are better taking a guess to the high side (so that you know you don't know money) and then filing your taxes.

My experience in Georgia was that the penalty for the late return was negligible and I was refunded the difference promptly.  That being said, don't stretch out into years late.  Past the point of a normal extension, the agencies (IRS/state DOR) calculate your taxes for you based on whatever information they have and that becomes a difficult number to get them to change.  Their information typically will include W-2, 1099s, mortgage interest paid, your filing status assuming no change, but not much else on the deduction side, for example real estate taxes paid, or business expenses.

Each tax year has to be filed separately using the forms for the specific tax year.  They cannot be combined in any way--do not even put them in the same envelope when you mail them.  Software for past years is available back to 2017.  Any earlier years can only be prepared on paper forms by hand--and those refunds have been forfeited now.

The current online program can only be used for a 2020 return--no other year.  And if you did not file a 2019 return you will have trouble e-filing 2020.  When it asks for your 2019 AGI try using zero.  If zero does not work then you have to print, sign and mail 2020.

Online preparation and e-filing for 2017, 2018 and 2019 is permanently closed.

To file a return for a prior tax year

If you need to prepare a return for 2017, 2018, or 2019 you can purchase and download desktop software to do it, then print, sign,  and mail the return(s)

https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/past-years-products/

You may also want to explore purchasing the software from various retailers such as Amazon, Costco, Best Buy, Walmart, Sam’s, etc.

Remember to prepare your state return as well—if you live in a state that has a state income tax.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses.  Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.

Note:  The desktop software you need to prepare the prior year return must be installed/downloaded to a full PC or Mac.  It cannot be used on a mobile device.

If you are getting a refund, there is not a penalty for filing past the deadline.  If you owe taxes, the interest/penalties will be calculated by the IRS based on how much you owe and when they receive your return and payment. The IRS will bill you for this; it will not be calculated by TurboTax.

The stimulus check is an advance on a credit you can receive on your 2020 tax return.  If something went wrong or you did not get the stimulus check in 2020, you can get it when you file your 2020 return in early 2021

The Recovery Rebate Credit will be found in the FEDERAL REVIEW section. ( you should see "Let's make sure you got the right stimulus amount”)  If you are eligible it will end up on line 30 of your 2020 Form 1040.

Make sure that you enter ALL of the stimulus money received for the 1st and 2nd stimulus for yourself, your spouse and your children.
