I have filed my taxes already but I need to change my payment source for my upcoming payment to the IRS how do I do that?

I tried contacting TurboTax who I filed through and they told me that once it goes to the IRS they have no information or can't tell me how to do that

Correct. Once your return is transmitted to the IRS, the only thing you can do is try and cancel the payment, by calling the IRS, assuming you can reach a human being.  To prevent fraud, the IRS will not accept verbal or written instructions to change the payment account or payment method, the only thing you can do is cancel the payment.  Then you would make your own payment arrangements by mailing a check or making an electronic payment at www.irs.gov/payments.

Thank you for the reply but I can't get through to the IRS and I can't use their automated system for this particular situation because it asks for the pmt source acct or card # as one of the identifiers. I used a card that I had to report lost or stolen so I don't have the info. I don't know what to do from here except keep calling the IRS. I tried making a online IRS account but it's having trouble verifying my identity so it says I need to talk to an agent. They are making it very difficult to do the right thing and pay my taxes on time. Any suggestions?

Did you try this -

  • Call IRS e-file Payment Services 24/7 at 1-888-353-4537 to inquire about or cancel your payment, but please wait 7 to 10 days after your return was accepted before calling.
  • Cancellation requests must be received no later than 11:59 p.m. ET two business days prior to the scheduled payment date.
