In the US we use a different term for discounts and promotions.  You may be trying to use our Canadian version.  Please follow this in order to use the activation code https://turbotax.community.intuit.ca/questions/1561571-where-do-i-plug-in-my-activation-code

You will enter  the License code box on the activation screen, and select Continue to complete installation. Ref: Activating TurboTax CD/Download software

i hava a standard online edition which i purchase but i am having trouble trying to figure out where and when to put in the activation coder

The online edition does not require an activation code.  Only the CD/Download versions require an activation code.

i purchased a standard online turbotax edition from costco with a activation code and was told you don"t use it with the online version.How will turbo know that it is prepaid?

The CD version is what you will need the activation code for. You’ll only need to enter it and validate the first time you install it on your computer. If you are using the TurboTax online version, you do not need an activation code. You would just need to sign into your online account. For more information please click the link below.
