I filed a extention thinking I needed it but want to pay it off. State is showing 0 dollars now. How do I pay off the amount I owe before filing a extention?

I live in Montana and it said I owed like 300 before doing this.

For starters, it's to late to file an extension for your federal taxes as well as any state taxes. An extension must be filed on or before the original tax filing deadline. Even if you did file an extension before the April 18, 2023 deadline, that only extends your time to file; not your time to pay. Any taxes due the IRS were still due by April 18. So if your tax return shows yo owe taxes, you will also pay an "ESTIMATED" late penalty and interest, in addition to any late filing fees that may be assessed.

Federal taxes can be paid on line at www.irs.gov/payments. State taxes are a different story as it depends on the state. Not all states have the ability to pay on line.

Does your return show an extension payment you didn't make?  You need to delete it.

If you need to delete a payment,  see this Extension FAQ for how to get there.  Then you can change to amount to zero.

You can type estimates paid in the search box at the top of your return and click Find and it will give you a link to Jump To the screen where you enter Extension Payments.

To enter, change or delete a payment made with an extension request (Federal, State, Local) -

• Click on Federal Taxes (Personal using Home and Business)

• Click on Deductions and Credits

• Click on I'll choose what I work on (if shown)

• Scroll down to Estimates and Other Taxes Paid

• On Other Income Taxes, click on the start or update button

On the next screen select the type of extension payment made and click on the start or update button

Or enter federal extension payment in the Search box located in the upper right of the program screen.  Click on Jump to federal extension payment
