I entered 4 est tax payments for 2021 in TT, and a 5th payment made when I filed for an extension. The 4 est. payments appear on return, but not the extension payment?

How do I fix this?

For 2021 Federal Extension payments should be on schedule 3 line 10. And go to 1040 line 31.

You can type estimates paid in the search box at the top of your return and click Find and it will give you a link to Jump To the screen where you enter Extension Payments.

To enter the amount you paid with an extension (including state extension)  go to

Federal Taxes (or Personal for desktop H&B version)

Deductions and Credits

Then scroll way down to Estimates and Other Taxes Paid

Other Income Taxes - Click the Start or Update button

Next page second section Payments with Extension

Either Visit All or Click Start or Update by the extension you paid

So if you entered it as an estimated payment, delete it from there and enter it under extension.

Yes I did enter the payment already as you described, but it was not included on the tax return even after I entered it in the "Payments with Extension" section.

I did the same thing and they did not show on my return. Should I do an amended return?

If you entered a payment with an extension it will be on your Form 1040 Line 31.

If the payment is not shown on your Form 1040, the IRS knows that you have made a payment.  There is no need to amend a return.

It is not on 1040 line 31. That field is blank. How will I get the $16,000 dollars back if I don’t file an amended return?  I paid Estimates of $8,000 (2021) and ($8,000) (2022). They show on the worksheet but not the 1040. I don’t want the time to expire to file amended returns. Last time I did that it took them three years to pay. They did pay with interest. Is there any harm filing amended returns?

That is different then what you originally posted.

If you paid estimated tax payments in 2021 and reported those payments on your 2021 tax return those will be shown on Form 1040 Line 26.  The same with the 2022 tax return, estimated tax payments are reported on Form 1040 Line 26.

Sorry if  I confused you. I thought you understood I was talking about estimates for taxes required when requesting extensions .  I made the payments in April 2022 and filed the tax returns for 2021 in October of 2022.  The quarterly estimates were there but not the payment made when filing for the extension. I have the receipts and proof the bank paid the check.

My mistake...

Since the extension payment has been debited from your bank account there is no reason to amend the return as the IRS has credited your tax account for the payment.

The payments made should be shown on your IRS tax account - https://www.irs.gov/payments/your-online-account
