I bought the CD, but my computer doesn't have a CD drive

I read from a previous help post on this topic which is marked as 'resolved': https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/product-delivery/bought-cd-computer-cd-d....

In the post the answer said "But, keep in mind, you can't use both the CD and the download. You must use one or the other."

It's difficult for me to comprehend why these two installation methods are mutually exclusive. Like, why should installing from the downloaded installer somehow invalidate my purchased CD. I suspect the answer is wrong, could you verify?

I'd like to confirm that I can continue to use my CD to install to a 2nd computer (e.g. my brother's computer which has a CD drive) after I install Turbox on my 1st computer (without a CD drive) using the downloaded installer.

OK ... when you use one method or the other to register the purchase you must use the same installation method  everytime so it is assiciated with the same account.  So if you use the downloaded option he also must use the download it is just that simple and the way the rules were written.

And the fine print in the rules says you can install the program on up to 5 computers that you personally own ... so do you own the computer that  your brother is using ?    If not then I would not squawk  to loudly about how it needs to be installed.

Thanks for your reply, nice to know about the fine print rule on computer ownership, it's one of those things that it's written there, but unsure how it can be enforced/verified and what's the point 😛

Back to my question, has anyone actually tried installing from the installer on CD, then get installer from the website and install it on another computer (e.g. the CD is lost or broken, and you need to install it on another computer, etc.) My understanding is these 2 installer are essentially the same binary file. I don't see why TurboTax will limit the distribute of this binary file, since even after you installed the program, you still need to key in the 'Activation Code' to use it, the activation code is how TurboTax actually tie things to account/license, etc.

Any technical/business reasons to restrict installing from either?
