I am filing my 1099-R and it is asking for the Payer's TIN. My form only has a federal id number, which was rejected, and a state number. Should I try the state number?

No.

The federal ID number and the payor's TIN as essentially similar and used to match the items reported on your income tax return to the IRS database for sources of income already reported to them.

The federal number and the state ID number are totally different and are not interchangeable.

I would recommend deleting the input in the Payor's TIN and then re-entering it or deleting the input for this 1099-R and then entering the information again.

Also, make sure you are entering the 1099-R in the correct input section.

The input would be under the Federal income section as follows:

  1. Select Income & Expenses
  2. Scroll down to All Income
  3. Select show more to the right of Retirement Plans & Social Security
  4. Select start/revisit to the right of IRA, 401(k), Pension Plan Withdrawals (1099-R)
  5. As you enter your 1099-R information, be sure to file out the state section.  The program will then answer any questions as it relates to that particular 1099-R.
  6. To enter additional 1099-R forms, simply select +Add Another 1099-R

My 1099-R does not have a State/Payer's state no. which is required by my state to file electronically. Box 15.

Any suggestions?

You may need to contact the payer to verify the correct ID numbers.  If there were no state withholdings, you can just leave the state withholding information blank.  No payer information is needed if there were no withholdings.

I had the same problem.  As a work around, I entered the "Payer's TIN" that I found on Form 1099-R.
