You don't need to amend your tax return to include Schedule SE. Self employment taxes are calculated automatically based on your self employment income.
Thank you! I didn't expect such a speedy reply.
I remember filing Turbo Tax 2019, Sch SE was not easy to find . As I wrote in first post, when i searched "Help" I thought it read was auto included for 2020???
My wife and I are clergy.
IRS: "In most cases, you must pay SE tax on
salaries and other income for services
you performed as a minister, a member
of a religious order"
I examined 2019 Return which used a SE Short Form. 2020 requires Long Form and i cannot figure it out! 🙂
Need help!
You can find amount of SE tax paid on your Form 1040 on a line 23, if you cannot locate Schedule SE in your tax return.
I really appreciate your help
Form 1040 Line 23 is "0". Our (my wife and I) W2s in Box 4 for Soc Sec Withheld is empty. We did get paid jointly ($25,558) and collected EDD, but, wouldn't we owe something for this income of $25,558? In year's past we always included a Sch SE for each of us.
I mentioned earlier, it was always a Short Form SE. Now in 2020 only a Long Form is available. I am assuming not submitting Sch SEs, this information transferred over to Soc Security will be "O". Soc Sec will get no $ for 2020. Is this true?
Having forgotten to submit Sch SEs when I filed, and Line 23 reads "0", do I still need to Amend?
This may be more information than you need but it will show you how to make sure your SE is included with your tax return.
Minister Data Entry - Most Common (steps 1-6)
Uncommon scenario:
Schedule C business code is 813000 - Schedule C is used for any clergy income that was not as an employee such as funerals, weddings or special speaking engagements as example; or if they work independently and not for just one church; or if the church did not report the income on a W2.
This method is best if the minister has unreimbursed expenses related to religious activities. Likewise questions are asked about paying self-employment tax on this income as well as a request for the housing allowance amount.
See image below.
OK, this was helpful. However, since I already completed filing and Refunds are on their way, how do I fix this.
1) Do I have to file an amendment edited version as you as laid out in "uncommon situations"?
2) And, would it entail paying back some of the Return Refund?
I'm curious: If I would have clicked on "Religious employment" would it have kicked me over to the Sch SE that I normally fill out each year? Or, doing it as you described would comply with Social Security?
What do I do next?
Thank you!
Amend will be available in late March. When you amend, your refund gets set back to zero and then any taxes that owe are added to that amount and that is what you will owe.
When you check religious employment, TurboTax asks the appropiate questions about that subject. It will ask about your housing allowance and your self employment.
You will need to file an amendment. Amendment in TurboTax will be available in late March. When you do the amendment you will walk through the amendment screens until you get to the self-employment section. After you review your W-2 information, click Religious Employment under uncommon situations. Then you will be asked about "Clergy Self-Employment Tax" and answer "Pay self-employment tax on wages and housing allowance" .
When you do the amend it will calculate the amount of the refund that will need to be repaid.
Yes, clicking Religious Employment under uncommon situations will bring up the questions about clergy housing and clergy self-employment taxes.
Wait until amend is available in TurboTax. Then amend your return and e-file the amended return. You will be asked how you want to pay the amount owed when you e-file The payment due date has been extended until May 17, 2021.
