I accidentally paid what I owed the IRS twice. How do I get a refund on what I overpaid?

When I efiled my taxes, I set up a date to have what I owed withdrawn from my checking account.  I then decided to pay that amount with a credit card thinking the IRS would not withdraw the amount.  However, they did withdraw the amount.  How can I get the amount I overpaid refunded?

You will have to call the IRS and speak with an agent about this overpayment.

Call the IRS: 1-800-829-1040 hours 7 AM - 7 PM local time Monday-Friday
When calling the IRS do NOT choose the first option re: "Refund", or it will send you to an automated phone line.
So after first choosing your language, then do NOT choose Option 1 (refund info). Choose option 2 for "personal income tax" instead.
Then press 1 for "form, tax history, or payment".
Then press 3 "for all other questions."
Then press 2 "for all other questions."
- When it asks you to enter your SSN or EIN to access your account information, don't enter anything.
- After it asks twice, you will get another menu.

Press 2 for personal or individual tax questions.
Then press 3 for all other inquiries
It should then transfer you to an agent.

This is outdated information, they have since changed their phone tree options and this method no longer works.

@Rammstein13579 There has been no activity on this thread since 2023---so, yes, it is out of date.

Well it still pops up in google's SEO towards the very top so the average person would probably assume it's recent info so I felt the need to clarify as I tried this method today to no avail.
