How to file form 5329 late RMD with TT desktop edition

I missed taking my RMD in time and I think I need to file form 5329.

I'm using the desktop version of TT and I don't see a way to select that form.

It keeps asking for my 1099-R info, but I don't have that form since I took the RMD for 2024 in 2025.

Or do I skip it and file it in 2025 with the penalty?

How to file form 5329 late RMD with TT desktop edition

Please make sure you updated TurboTax Desktop.

If you still not get the "Did You Miss a Required Distribution From Any Retirement Accounts?" screen after the disaster distribution screen then using the "forms" mode in TurboTax Desktop:

  1. Enter the forms mode and click on "Open Form" and type "5329".
  2. Scroll down to Part IX line 52 and enter the RMD amount that should have been taken. On line 53 enter the amount of the RMD that was actually taken (probably zero if it was missed).
  3. Then in the box right under line 53 "Waiver of Tax Smart Worksheet" enter the same amount as line 52 (the RMD amount) under A.
  4. Click the "Explanation" button and enter the reason for missing the RMD and your statement requesting a waiver.

How to file form 5329 late RMD with TT desktop edition

The RMD for 2024 will be reported on your 2025 return when you get the 2025 Form 1099-R in 2026. Don't forget to take your 2025 RMD.

You will need to file Form 5329  for the missed RMD and request a waiver of the penalty if you have reasonable cause. Please see Relief for Reasonable Cause for additional information.

Please follow these steps in TurboTax Desktop to file Form 5329:

  1. Click "Federal Taxes" on the top and select "Wages & Income"
  2. Click "I'll choose what to work on"
  3. Scroll down and click "Start" next to "IRA, 401(k), Pension Plan (1099-R)
  4. Answer "No" to the question "Did You Have Any of These Types of Income?" on the "Did you receive any 1099-R forms?" and continue.
  5. Continue until the "Did You Miss a Required Distribution From Any Retirement Accounts?" screen select what is applicable.
  6. TurboTax will walk you through the RMD questions

Thanks for the reply, but my TT is not working that way.

I select Retirement Plans and Social Security.

I'm asked "Did you receive any retirement income for 2024" and select No.

I'm taken back to Your 2024 Income Summary.

-----

I select Retirement Plans and Social Security.

I'm asked "Did you receive any retirement income for 2024" and select Yes.

I'm asked "Did you receive any 1099R forms?" and select No.

I'm asked "Did you take disaster distributions" and select No.

I'm asked "Did you receive social security" and select No.

I'm asked about Canadian Retirement Plans and select No.

I'm taken back to Your 2024 Income Summary.

-----

Under the summary Your 2024 Income it does see that I had a 1099R last year.  When I try to update just that section it keeps asking for the 1099R.

This is the desktop Deluxe version.
