How do I make manual adjustments to Schedule SE? I'm getting an error on the Deferral for Certain Schedule H or SE Filers Smart Worksheet line 11.

Do I have to enter a 0 in line 18 to make this error go away?  I feel like there are bugs in the software this year.  I've never had so many issues.

New for covid, Sch SE Line 18 is for the amount of money earned between March 27, 2020 and December 31, 2020. The self-employment tax on that portion can be postponed for payment in the following year. You can postpone that portion of your taxes due with no penalties or interest.

Thanks for taking the time to reply, but that was not my question. I get an error when I have a 0 (choosing not to defer anything) in line 11of the Deferral for Certain Schedule H or SE Filers Smart Worksheet. How do I get past this error? I thought it might help if I clear the value that I entered on line 18 of Schedule SE, but I can’t get back to that to change it. When I called, they said this error might be a software bug.

See if this works for you:

  1. When you go back into the Tax relief related to COVID-19
  2. Edit/update the SE tax deferral
  3. Select yes you want to defer.  If you have something in there, you can try to make it blank at that point, continue forward.
  4. When back to where you started, Edit/Update again and select NO to deferral.

If you really do have a problem, let's get eyes on it.  You can fill this form out for someone to call you.

Thanks, I’ll give that a try. I’m a bit concerned about putting nothing in box 18 of Schedule SE, because I actually did have self-employment income during that time period. I don’t want to provide false information, but I also can’t file my return with this error. I spent an hour on the phone with someone this weekend, and she couldn’t figure it out. She said she had seen other reports of the same problem, so I believe she put in an incident report. I’m not sure how I will know if that gets fixed.

When you go through and say NO to the deferral, it should be taking out the zero and just saying that you don't want to defer payment.

I checked investigations and don't see it listed as a problem -yet. I am glad you called. It takes time for the team to determine if something is a widespread problem or specific to you and so on.

Thank for checking. That's concerning if it's not listed as a problem after I spent all that time on the phone with no resolution. Do I need to call back again?

I'm having the same issue.  I don't want to take the SE deferral and then simply owe it next year.  Line 18 requires an entry.  If I enter the March 27 - December 31 amount, 1040 shows I have a "credit", but I'm guessing it's not really a credit, but a deferred payment I'll owe next year, right?  Is this a software issue.

Yes, if you don't not want to defer se taxes, then you can enter a 0 in line 18.

Hello,

Turbotax is telling me I'm not eligible for the COVID-19 SE deferral per the suggested workaround so my entries cannot be changed.  The 0 entry on line 11 of the SE worksheet is preventing my from transmitting my taxes for filing.  Additional help with this problem or a software bug fix is needed for me to file.

In TurboTax Online Self-Employed, I was able to enter a self-employment tax deferral and pass Review.  Then I was able to remove self-employment tax deferral and pass Review.  Follow these steps.

  • Down the left side of the screen, click on Federal.
  • Across the top of the screen, click on Deductions  & credits.
  • Under Your tax breaks, scroll down to Self-employment tax deferral.
  • Click on Edit/Add to the right of Self-employment tax deferral.
  • At the screen Do you want more time to pay your self-employment tax?, click Yes.
  • At the screen Let's start by getting your eligible income, I have left the dollar amount that was previously entered, others change this amount to $0.
  • Click on Continue.
  • At the screen Tell us how much you'd like to defer, delete the dollar amount.
  • Click Continue.
  • Click through Federal Review to make sure than the Review issue has been removed.
  • At the screen Some of your self-employment taxes may be eligible, click Skip.

The self-employment tax deferral is an optional benefit.  It is also a deferral rather than forgiveness, so those amounts will eventually need to be repaid. Half of the deferred amount is due on December 31, 2021, and the other half is due on December 31, 2022.

Thank you.  By re-clicking through the topics specified I got the the return to pass Federal review.

"Self-employment tax deferral" calculation is still messed up!!! The IRS caught it and did not allow me to take the deferral, since we were getting a refund. When I go into Turbo Tax, no matter how I answer the question "Do you want more time..." it tells me we're not eligible, and then puts the deferral in anyway!!!
