Whose tax return is being rejected----your child's? Make sure they said in My Info that they can be claimed as someone else's dependent.
Hi,
I have the same rejection for my child. She was claimed as a dependent on my return, but she has income to report, so she prepared her own return and has "some one can claim you as dependent" box checked. I e-filed my return first successfully. But she was e-filing this past weekend, she got rejected with IND-515-01 reported by turbo tax.
Did enough research, can't figure out why. Other than the suggested reason that it could be ID theft, wondering if it is a bug with Turbo tax, or some form boxes not checked, or any suggestions are highly appreciated.
This reject code means the primary taxpayer's SSN has already been included as the primary taxpayer on another return.
This means that someone has already filed a return using your SSN.
Thanks, and we got that from the code definition.
Since we didn't already file the tax, we suspect it could be fraudulent. But we want to make sure that there is no other mistakes on our side/turbo tax causing it. Hence posting the question here for anyone might have the similar experience.
The IRS—not eFile.com—has rejected your return because the primary Social Security Number (SSN) cannot be the same the primary SSN on another IRS return filed for this tax year.
However, if you are certain you entered your primary SSN correctly, but you keep getting rejected anyway, PRINT your return(s)—IRS and State(s)—and MAIL it in on time. See printing and mailing instructions plus addresses based on your resident state.
After that, contact the IRS at 1-800-829-1040 and/or State and discuss your tax return in more detail. If the IRS does not accept your return, because a return under your SSN has been accepted by the IRS ask yourself if you have already filed elsewhere. The IRS has rejected your return because the primary Social Security Number (SSN) cannot be the same as the primary SSN on another IRS return filed for this tax year.
Apparently the IRS received a tax return with the same SSN as was used on your tax return, assuming you are the primary taxpayer listed on your return.
You should request an Identity Protection PIN from the IRS to be used on all future tax returns to prevent this issue again. Go to this IRS website to request an IP PIN - https://www.irs.gov/identity-theft-fraud-scams/get-an-identity-protection-pin
You will need to print and mail your tax return this year.
See this TurboTax support FAQ for how to print a return for mailing when using the online editions - https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/printers-printing/print-mail-return-turb...
In my case, it was a fraudulent tax return filed using our SSN. Called IRS and they confirmed that was filed 10 days before our attempt of efile.
Then we needed to print out and mail in, as well as going through other steps informing IRS the situation.
Sorry to hear that! Thanks for the response - I will call first thing tomorrow.
I requested the PIN. Wondering if anyone has any thoughts...
I have an Id.me account and was able to verify (as of today, at least) that there is no tax return filed for 2023 under my daughters social. Any idea if it take a while for the IRS to show the tax transcript in their portal?
Just to be clear, the error code is meant for your and/or your joint filer's SSN were already used by some one else as primary SSNs in the filing.
If you daughter is a dependent on your filing, and there was a fraudulent filer using her SSN to file as primary and didn't mark that she could be claimed as dependent in someone else's filing, I am not sure you would get the same error code.
Looking back at your original post, it was never clear how was your filing situation and when you encountered the error code.
