How can I apply 2020 federal overpayment to my 2021 return? I see answers from 2016/2017 that reference a section under "Estimated Taxes" but it is not there now.

The only workaround I can think of is to enter "dummy" ES payments, which is not technically correct since I did not send in ES payments.  Plus, turbotax warns me in Estimated Payments that this is not the right place for overpayments -- so there must be an actual way to enter it?!?

If it didn't transfer over from last year then enter a refund from last year that you applied to this year here.   BUT first make sure it's not already there.  You don't want to apply it twice.

If you're using the same TurboTax account (same username and password) that you used when filing your 2020 return, this "refund applied to next year's return" should automatically populate into your 2021 return.  If it didn't, you can use the instructions I'm linking below to locate where to enter this 2020 refund applied to 2021 tax liability.

How do I get credit for a refund applied to 2021's taxes?

First-time TT user so no prior data to guide me. (Well, I had some dummy placeholder data in 2020 that was just enough to screw things up.)

I had to "trigger" the generation of the option to enter an overpayment since I was too literal when the opening questions asked if I had "received a refund."  (I assumed that meant a check and a 1099-G.)  I had not; I applied an overpayment to the following year's taxes -- but I guess that is still a "refund."
