Hello,
We had some medical expenses last year to get a surgical procedure done and had to travel to another state. We rented a car. Can the rental car expenses and the miles be deducted?
You'll need to sign in or create an account to connect with an expert.
If the travel was necessary, as opposed to voluntary, then you can deduct the travel expenses. You can either deduct the cost of the car rental or the mileage allowance ($0.17 per mile), but not both.
Ok great thank you! Do you know if there is a minimum number that can be deducted?
You would use your actual expenses or the mileage incurred. There wouldn't be a minimum number as you are only entitled to deduct either the mileage or actual expenses.
Please see the excerpt below from Publication 502.
Thank you for the response! Do you know if there is an easy way to separate and do married filling separately since I have already completed most of the Turbo Tax interview? In other words what would I have to remove to make it work?
Please see the link below for details on how to see the comparison.
It is easily done in the desktop version of the software but would involve creating "test" returns in the online version.
