filing for deceased person

hello.. last year I used turbo tax to file the final return for my mother's income tax . I need to file a final income tax return to report the sale of her home and land as the executor of the estate that was sold in 2024. My mother died December 2022 and we sold the property in 2024. In turbo tax I am getting an error message that her death date cant be 2022 and must be a later date....I  am trying to understand did i miss a step in filing?

Yes.  Your mother can't file a tax return for a year when she wasn't alive.  The sale of her home either needs to be reported on an estate tax return (form 1041) or on the tax returns of the heirs who sold the house and got the money.

Thanks .. yes my mother died in 2022 however i didnt file her final tax return until 2024 and I made note it was the estate of my mother for 2022 and was issued her refund as the executor... I sold her home in 2024 as the executor and the proceeds were set-up under the ein number... My question is now I am told I dont file anymore returns for my mother for the sale of the home.. I need to generate a k1 for myself and my sister is that correct? So where in the process do I create the k1 for myself and my sister? I am a bit confused on next steps. Thanks

I am unsure if I should just complete the 1041 for the estate of my mom to report to IRS for the sale of the property or to report the income on my personal taxes and create a k1 for me and my sister?

If your mom had an estate, and the sale was done under the estate, then you will need to complete Form 1041 and issue Schedules K-1 for you and your sister.

What's a 1041 form?

How do I file Form 1041 for an estate or trust?

I did the return on Turbo tax  for my mother's estate  and reported the sale of the home however I was not prompted to create a K1 document.

You entered all the beneficiaries and selected the income distributed, you should have a k-1 with the income in box 4a for each beneficiary you listed.

Review your entries and selections for each beneficiary and treatment of the income.
