Filed 2019 return. It was rejected - incorrectly done. Corrected

Looks like a common problem.  What does TT or Intuit intend to do?

When did you try to e-file the 2019 return?  E-filing for 2019 returns has been permanently closed since October of 2020.   Did you try to e-file it last year before it was too late to e-file for 2019?   What did you do after that?   Did you print, sign and mail it?   Once e-filing closed, the only way for you to file your 2019 return was by mail.  You can still do that.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses.  Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.

What is your question?  Do you still need to file 2019?  Or trying to efile 2020?  Enter 0 for the 2019 AGI to efile 2020 since 2019 was rejected or not filed on time or was mailed.

@xmasbaby0

thanks for the try, but it didn’t get me covered.  I filed 2019 on time, mailed correctly, no problems, EXCEPT I made a mistake and failed to do it right.  So, that return was rejected.  Refiled, did it right the second time, and cleared the decks.  Letters from IRS confirmed.

THE PROBLEM: tried to e-file again this year.  Rejected within hours by IRS.  Missing data: my AGI from last year’s return.

Whoa!  Howcome?

The idiot IRS was looking for my AGI from the rejected initial return and absolutely refused to accept my AGI from the revised return!

Well, I had discarded old rejected returns.  Turbotax did the same and apparently doesn’t know about this (even though I see questions about this exact issue going back to 2016!).  So, no way to dig up that matching number (IRS refused to give it to me - email or over the phone) and the only way to get the return done was to mail it.  Done.  Buyer beware.  NEVER THROW ANYTHING OUT IF THERE IS ANY CHANCE SOME BUREAUCRAT WILL MAKE YOUR LIFE MISERABLE SOMETIME DOWN THE ROAD!!  😉

Did you try entering 0 for the AGI to efile?  Try it.  The IRS took a long time to process 2019 returns so the AGI didn't get updated in the IRS in time to lookup now.

@VolvoGirl : Yep.  (Background: filed 8 - as in eight - times thru Turbotax, rejected 8 times!). On CS advice, did exactly as you suggested.  Bounced in about 5 hours.  Tried “$0”, tried “$1”, tried refiling with correct (updated) number - all bounced out...

Turbotax CS advised me they were sending the issue up the ladder for a longer look.  No help to me this year, tho...
