Do you have a TurboTax Online account?

We'll help you get started or pick up where you left off.

Electronic filling was rejected Feb 2021. March 2021 I mailed my 1040X. 09/15/2021 and still no record my return. What can I do?

Was rejected because of dependant/stimulus oversight. Unable to amend online, mailed documents. Over six months and "where's my amended return" doesn't even acknowledge my returns existence. I dont think waiting hours to speak with an IRS person will help, what should i do?

What?  You do not amend a rejected return.  If it rejected it was never filed.  You just fix it and resend it.   Or print and mail the original return.   The IRS won't know what to do with an amended 1040X return since they didn't get the first return.   They will probably mail it back to you.   And it's taking them 6 months or more this year to process amended returns.

Seems like you still need to file the original return.

Yes----if your original return was rejected then it was never filed in the first place.   So sending in a 1040X was not the way to fix problem.   You only send in a 1040X to fix a mistake on a return that has been fully processed, but that had missing or incorrect information on it.

The IRS will not process a Form 1040X if they do not have an original Form 1040 to match it up to.   That will just cause confusion, and they are already so backlogged it could take months for them to sort out the returns if you file the original after the 1040X.

You should file your original return.  You do not say why it was rejected.   If it was rejected for AGI try to use zero as the AGI and see if you can e-file it.   Or you might just have to print, sign and mail it now, since you went ahead and sent in that 1040X.  Not sure if the software will even let you try to e-file the original one since you already sent a 1040X.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses.  Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.
