I have the 2017 version. Do I need to buy the 2018 version?

Each tax year has its own specific software.  You cannot use 2017 software to prepare a 2018 tax return.  You need 2018 software for a 2018 return.

You have until October 15, 2019 to e-file a 2018 return, whether you use online or desktop software.  After that, e-filing will shut down for 2018 returns and your 2018 returns will have to be printed, signed and mailed.
