Individual returns (fed and state) e-filed yesterday using TurboTax Deluxe but next day found an error in deductions that needs corrected.
Fed and State refunds showing when submitted.....after correction is made will owe money, thus need to submit a "superseding return" before April 15th deadline so as not incur penalties.
IRS now supports : superseding e-filing of 1040 forms - see third paragraph down at this location :
Has TurboTax Deluxe software updated the program to handle this option when e-filing ? If so how do file ?
(A superseding return is defined as a second (or subsequent) return filed on or before the due date for filing, including extensions.)
You'll need to sign in or create an account to connect with an expert.
A superseding return is defined as a second (or subsequent) return can be filed on or before the due date for filing, including extensions.
A superseding return must be filed on a paper Form 1040 – e-filing is not allowed. Write "Superseding Return" at the top of the form.
You can accomplish the same thing if you file your amended return before the due date of the return and can file that electronically.
The forum software broke the link that WDV posted. Here is the correct link.
IRS: Taxpayers now have more options to correct, amend returns electronically
Also note an error in the wording of the paragraph that WDV referenced. The word "superseded" should be "superseding." The second return that is filed is a superseding return. The original return is the one that is superseded.
Thank you Cynthia !
I found that IRS now supports e-filing superseding returns and provides a button to note such.
