You have a $9,500 exemption because you are married ($8,800) and one of you is age 65 ($700).
$8,800 + $700 = $9,500.
Each taxpayer is entitled to claim a personal exemption. The amount of your personal exemption
depends on your filing status in line 1.
◗ If you are single or married filing a separate return, enter $4,400 in line 2a.
◗ If filing as head of household, enter $6,800 in line 2a.
◗ If married filing a joint return, enter $8,800 in line 2a
You are allowed an additional $700 exemption if you were age 65 or over before January 1, 2023. If your spouse was age 65 or over and you are filing a joint return, you may also claim a $700 exemption for your spouse. Fill in the appropriate oval(s) and enter the total number of persons age 65 or over in the small box. Multiply that total by $700 and enter the total in line 2c.

Yes, 4,400 Single or MFS, $6,800 Head Of Household, or $8,800 MFJ
Hi Dawn,
Thank you. I knew MA offered those exemptions but when I completed my Turbo tax returns, (Fed and MA), I don't see the deduction for MFJ $8800 listed in the 'MA Income and Deductions Summary' section when I review the return as prepared. My concern is the filing status did not get properly applied when brought over from the FED return and it did not apply the deduction.
How can I check and confirm this with Turbotax? I'm not going to pay the tax consultant fee just to check that.
Thank You- Brad
Since you are using the online version of Turbo Tax go to the black panel on the left panel of your program and go to tax tools>tools>view tax summary>look at Massachusetts Tax summary> look at total 5% exemptions.
If you prepared your return correctly, the $8800 will appear there. Also will appear in line 2A in Massachusetts Form 1 if you have access to your forms.
No Tax Tools are listed in the left-hand panel and can't see forms until I file and I don't want to do that until I confirm this deduction.
Found 'Tools' after going back into the review section - only list Summary for the FED return not the state that I'm looking for.
When you open your program, you should be able to see this. You should be in your return and if you are, you should see a screen that looks like this. IF not, please show me the screen that appears before you.
I found it - not listing that $8800 MFJ deduction in MA return - reviewing why now-
To clarify, where did you find it if not listed in the MA return?
See this screen - option for state summary was above in menu - see screen - still no deduction listed for MFJ $8800 MA tax-
