You are totally right, when you buy from ANYBODY else other than TurboTax, your license code AND download WILL indeed appear on the TurboTax website until such time as TurboTax ever goes out of business.
Why the heck do people need personal tax software 10 years old for home use?
But let's say that you do. That CD of yours is likely not good any more. But what IS good is the download from TurboTax.
It cannot be said enough and the people demanding CDs are just not getting it.
NO OTHER company is producing CDs period.
TurboTax has been storing your licenses and downloads for your convenience for more than 10 years.
Frankly I welcome it. And I'm 65 years old.
BUT FYI - Since you now have to log into an Intuit Account all your downloads and licenses are listed there (even if you bought it from somewhere else) so if you need to download to install it again or install on another computer, even on the other operating system (Windows, Mac).
I bought the download from Costco for 2023. Since you now have to log in to a Turbo Tax Account, the License Codes and downloads are listed in my Turbo Tax account. Access your downloads here
https://shop.turbotax.intuit.com/commerce/account/secure/login.jsp?pagecontext=download
But even if you have the CDs you won’t be able to reinstall 2020 or prior. They only support the last 3 years. The License Code started in 2019. So 2019 and 2020 needs to connect to Turbo Tax to verify the License Code. So you can’t install and activate 2020 or prior and adding a new year going forward.
One confusion people have, is that the Online version is NOT the Download program. The Download program is EXACTLY the same Desktop program as the CD. You buy it the same way directly from Turbo Tax or in stores like Costco. When you installed the CD you still had to go online to update it. It's only the method you use to install it. Even when I bought the CD I used the download method to install it.
Great! Purchase H&R Block's desktop version to punish Intuit.
You will very likely NOT receive a CD and only a key.
In the EXTREMELY remote chance you receive a CD, it will ONLY contain a download launcher because THEIR entire installer will be in the cloud to ensure it is always up to date. It will still install locally.
It cannot be stated enough. EVERYBODY leaves the entire program in the cloud for install. ANY CD for the past 10 years has downloaded the entire program for installation.
Go ahead, punish Intuit, they could use it.
Many of us are trying to get people to understand Intuit is NOT taking away your purchase of the desktop software. Since 2016, you continue to own the app and can install it on your computer. I have just did an experiment and installed 2016 to 2023 as clean installs without incident.
But here is what people do not realize. You CANNOT do a simple amend if you reinstall. You need to go through extra steps and will need to contact Intuit support.
Some people are adamant they need a previous version of Turbo Tax so they can print out a copy of their taxes when they need it. For that, they are missing the point of backing up their return to PDF. That is the SAFE method every year and the STRONGLY recommended method since version ONE. ALL professional tax preparers strongly recommend that. ALL tax programs you purchase strongly recommend that.
We have been using cd premier for YEARS!
@MJeanCaudle Why do you want the CD? The Download program is EXACTLY the same Desktop program as the CD. You buy it the same way directly from Turbo Tax or in stores like Costco. When you installed the CD you still had to go online to update it. It's only the method you use to install it. Even when I bought the CD I used the download method to install it. Don't confuse the Download program with the Online browser version.
Since you now have to log into an Intuit Account all your downloads and licenses are listed there (even if you bought it from somewhere else) so if you need to download to install it again or install on another computer, even on the other operating system (Windows, Mac).
Will I be able to install this download on more than one device ? You are wrong about it being the same experience. I never had a problem using the box purchased cd installed on both my desktop and laptop . But one year I tried to download it to my laptop and it would not work if I also had it on my desktop pc.
There was a problem in the past if you installed the CD then tried to install by downloading to another computer. That is no longer a problem since there is no more CD and you have to download the program.
Since you now have to log into an Intuit Account all your downloads and licenses are listed there (even if you bought it from somewhere else) so if you need to download to install it again or install on another computer, even on the other operating system (Windows, Mac).
I also DEMAND TURBOTAX NOT TO DISCONTINUE CD FOR 2024 TAX YEAR.
I feel safe with a physical copy when and if my unit crashes can reload the program and reenter the serial number. with this download if it crashes then all is lost. I need a physical copy in my hand.
I have been with you since the floppy disk. if you change then I will change as well with the free federal and state now being offered.

@erchez410 If your computer crashes the download is not lost. Since you now have to log into an Intuit Account all your downloads and licenses are listed there (even if you bought it from somewhere else) so if you need to download to install it again or install on another computer, even on the other operating system (Windows, Mac).
You can also burn the installation file to a CD or save to a usb flash drive.
the serial number is gone. I prefer the serial number.
and what about all my other Disks? do you have them as well; I have every copy for over ten years on computer.
Serial number? Why do you need that? You need the License Code. The License Code started in 2019.
But even if you have the CDs you won’t be able to reinstall 2020 or prior. They only support the last 3 years. And the License Code started in 2019. So 2019 needs to connect to Turbo Tax to verify the License Code. But they have stopped supporting 2019. So you can’t install and activate 2019 and newer when they stop supporting each year going forward.
And if you do get 2018 and prior installed you won’t be able to update it or download any state programs. So you should save all your returns to a pdf file with all the worksheets. Open each year and save them now if you haven’t already.

The license code is available on the download screen. You can still use the CD for prior tax years but since TurboTax does not support tax years prior to 2021 you will not be able to update the software nor access a state program.
Two screenshots - The first is the 2024 download page which shows the license code (redacted). The second shows 11 years of downloads available.
