Coinbase csv file not compatible on turbotax? No Headers Found In This File error?

@covertrain is correct.

You can use the cryptocurrency import and other features with the TurboTax Online Premier and Self-employed versions, only.

One option is to start a free tax return in TurboTax Premier Online. You don't pay for the return until you file it, so you won't have to pay the Online fee.  Enter (import) your cryptocurrency information in the Crypto section, and then save the .tax file (not PDF).  You can then open the tax file in TurboTax desktop, add the rest of your tax data and file.

The problem is that the IRS expects each transaction looked at in case any of the transactions were losses due to personal use, such as lunch at Starbucks or payments towards bills, etc.

  • Losses on use of personal property should not be included on your return.
  • However. all the gains are included along with any transactions that were investment related.

One option is to do this outside of TurboTax and only enter the total lines for short term and long term transactions that do qualify to be reported. Please see the TurboTax FAQ: How do I enter a large number of stock transactions in TurboTax Online?

Coinbase csv file not compatible on turbotax? No Headers Found In This File error?

This is the first year I've entered crypto transactions.  It was a freaking nightmare, I had some from Coinbase, and some from Coinbase Pro.  Same company mind you, but totally different reporting features. The Coinbase Pro transactions had to be uploaded to a totally different website and have them calculate my cost basis, and then import that into TurboTax.  AND, after I had paid my filing fee I received an error that my taxes couldn't transmit (e-file or print) and that was two weeks ago and all I hear from TurboTax is "We're working on this known issue."

So they have my money, I can't file, they won't give me a refund, so I'm at the mercy of their developers to figure this out before April.  My recommendation is if you have crypto transactions, do NOT use TurboTax, they obviously haven't figured this out yet.

There is nothing "Turbo" about this.  I followed the instructions above, exported the file in the correct format, imported the file into the desktop version.  Basically, I would have to start my return over from scratch to use it.  However, that's not all.  When I tried to click on the information imported for Crytpo?  The Desktop version seems confused.  It just gave me the spinning wheel forever.  When it stopped?  I couldn't see the Crypto info in the new return.  Even if I could?  I wouldn't start my return over.  This is a nightmare.

If you can't get your .csv to import from the broker, download it to your computer. Now you have options.

Option 1 You can make your own file. Manually change your columns to 5 columns in this order:

  1. Purchase date
  2. Date sold
  3. Proceeds
  4. Cost basis
  5. Currency name

Then you can upload the document and select 1099-B as the type. To upload:

My Docs is available in all paid TurboTax Online products or by adding PLUS to Free Edition.

  1. Sign in to your TurboTax account. If you're already signed in, select Tax Home on the left menu
  2. Scroll down to Your tax returns & documents. Select Show and select your desired tax year
  3. Select My Docs
  4. Select Upload and select the document you want to upload
  5. Answer the questions and select Done or Upload another tax form

Option 2  You may be able to convert your .csv file to a .txf file and upload it into TurboTax Desktop version.

Follow these steps outlined by @JoeFM here

  • Create a .csv file with all transactions using the format shown at Easytxf.
  • Used Easytxf to convert the .csv file into .txf file.
  • Import .txf file into Turbotax Desktop:  File / Import / From Accounting Software / Other Financial Software (TXF) file /  Continue / Choose a File to Import / Import now.
  • A 1099-B with all Crypto transactions is now created.   This entry can now be edited to include the account details.  Each transaction can be edited as well.

Coinbase csv file not compatible on turbotax? No Headers Found In This File error?

The Gemini import does not work and the transaction history which I download from Gemini and convert to a csv file doesn't work with TurboTax bc the title headers and data needs to be changed and reformatted.  Since I have zero faith that the TurboTax Gemini import will work on April 6, can TurboTax at least provide instructions on how to modify the Gemini csv file since turbo match can't map it properly for filing?

It's good that you have downloaded your Gemini transactions to your computer.   You can  go through your transactions to see which (if any) need to be reported on your tax return.

Click this link for more info on How is Crypto Taxed?

If you find that some transactions need to be reported either as 'Earned Income' or as 'Property Sales' you can enter them appropriately in TurboTax.

You can delete transactions that don't need to be reported from your transaction file you saved to your computer.  Try to save it as a PDF file if you are able to.

If you have transactions to report as Property Sales (for Capital Gains) you can summarize those transactions (choose Sales Section Totals) and enter only a couple lines into TurboTax.  (Say NO, you don't have a 1099-B, but after that treat your transaction files 'as if' it were a 1099-B).

TurboTax will ask later how you would like to report your transactions to the IRS, and you can indicate that you will attach a PDF to your efiled return, if you were able to save your transaction file as a PDF.

If you can't save your transaction file as a PDF, you can still Efile your return (with the Sales Section Totals) and mail a copy of your saved transaction file to the IRS.  Your 'Filing Instructions' tell you where to mail it.

It's not quite that easy since I'm trying to file through TurboTax by uploading the csv file in the format containing the info needed.  We have over $10k in losses so It would help to be able to claim the losses and carry over the losses.  TurboTax is not making it easy

I was able to import a .csv file into TurboTax Online Premier version.

All the columns from the .csv file were deleted except for the five columns listed below.

All other lines other than the headings and the five columns of data were deleted.

  • Purchase Date
  • Date Sold
  • Proceeds
  • Cost Basis
  • Currency Name

All transactions imported and are available for review.

The file I have downloaded from Gemini with the transaction history for 2021 doesn't have purchase date, sold date, cost basis, etc.  It has Date, Type (Buy or Sell), Symbol, USD amounts fee, USD Balance, and other columns.  So it's a print out of all transactions.  So it's a chronological print out of transaction history , which at first I thought I could sort and manipulate but, how?

Coinbase csv file not compatible on turbotax? No Headers Found In This File error?

Here we are in 2023 and this problem is STILL NOT FIXED. The Tech Support will try to tell you that you need to talk to a TAX Specialist which costs money for an upgrade. HOWEVER, this is not a TAX issue, it's a TECH issue. Unless they're doing this on purpose to get you to buy a higher tier version of TurboTax, it's not acceptable that we're still having this same issue 3+ years later.

Here's the crux of the problem: I chose TurboTax through Coinbase ad because of the integration. Said integration doesn't work. You download the file labeled 'TURBOTAX CSV' from Coinbase. You upload this file and TurboTax says something about the Headers don't match. Yet, it doesn't tell you that you'd need to manually edit the headers because it's an integration and should work without Consumers having to edit .CSV files. What a nightmare that would be.

So, let's start this thread back up because here in 2023 it's STILL NOT WORKING. TURBO TAX HAS A BUG AND NEEDS A DEVELOPER TO LOOK.

Coinbase csv file not compatible on turbotax? No Headers Found In This File error?

Here in 2023 this bug is still not fixed by TURBOTAX. This is 100% on their end. This partner ship seems like a scam. Only solution TurboTax phone support offered was if I pay more money to speak to a Tax Specialist. This isn't a Tax Specialist problem. It's a TECHNICAL problem that no one from TurboTax seems to want to fix.

Moving over to TaxAct I believe this year.
