My parent is staying with us for a year, but they do not have SSN.
Can I add them as dependent on them having SSN?
Is there any alternative to claim them as dependent?
You'll need to sign in or create an account to connect with an expert.
To claim someone as a dependent on a US tax return they must have either a Social Security number which is valid for employment or an ITIN issued by the IRS. If neither, you cannot claim them on your tax return.
My parent will stay with us for 6 months with tourist visa.
Do you think she can get SSN or ITiN?
Unfortunately no. Your parents should have either SSN or ITIN for you to claim them on the tax return. They should also satisfy the substantial presence test.
