Bug in TurboTax 2021 Premier regarding RSU

I have 3 lots of RSU vested, with partial shares withheld/sold to pay taxes.

I entered the individual lots as per 1099-B and employer info:

5/21/21 : 4 vested, 2 sold

5/21/21: 1 vested, 1 sold

11/21/21: 4 vested, 2 sold

all short term noncovered.

All the numbers match, including the total declared by employer in the W-2.

However, upon smart check verification, Turbo Tax claims that 1 share is not accounted for and needs to be added to the Part VI RSU / Line 25 column B lots list. That is incorrect. The shared are all accounted for.

Thinking about an issue with dealing with a 1 vested/1sold, I tried to combine the two lots together >> 5 vested, 3 sold.

The problem is still there.

It seems a bug in Turbo Tax. I checked and rechecked the values and nothing seems to be wrong with the numbers.

One option would be to report this sale as a simple sale of "plain-vanilla" stock, stock that's no different than a stock you bought through your broker (as long as you know or can determine your correct cost basis which it appears that you do).  You will have to delete what you have entered; however, the overriding objective is to create an accurate tax return.  If you can do that by entering this information as a basic stock transaction, then that might resolve the error.

In connection with entering the RSU information, answer NO to 'is this employee stock ' which will avoid having to enter vesting info, stock sold for taxes, etc.  Moreover, the value of the RSUs has already been included on your W-2 and reported to the IRS by your employer.

thanks.

For now I filed for an extension hoping for a bug fix, but will try this workaround in case.

Hi mmax71, I thought I ran into the same thing on something that was 1 vest/1 sell-to-cover (STC). Mine ended up being user error (my own fault), not sure about yours.

When you enter the details, TurboTax asks you for the transaction date and how many were sold - elsewhere on the page they clarify that the "sold" field should not include sell-to-cover transactions. I had been putting 1 in that field thinking it was for the sell-to-cover, but after putting it to 0 based on the instructions, the error went away. The next page lets you put in the 1 from the STC.

I have the exact same problem! (1 vested / 1 sold bug)

I am now working around it by not reporting it as RSU, and selecting "the cost basis on my statement is incorrect" to make the adjustment, but that will make the total RSUs computed by turbo tax less than shown on W-2 box 14, not sure if this will have any impact, could someone clarify that?

That won't have an impact if you're holding onto the stock.

I am here in September. Downloaded latest update for TurboTax, hoping for the fix. Nada.

I ended up doing same as you, and was able to file.
