@18686 Well, I will have to admit to never trying to e-file an amended return that that was not changed from the original.

But, I see no reason why you cannot e-file the the federal amended return even if nothing changed so that would enable you to e-file the state tax return.

The short answers: Yes, you can amend *just* the state return. No, you can't e-file it.

I faced this situation a year ago to correct an under-reported withholding amount for a state return filed four years earlier, which was brought to my attention by the state (CA) via a letter. As in your case, my federal return for that year was *not* affected. As I recall, I had to use the TurboTax version for that year, which was still loaded on my PC and navigate to the section for amending returns. (If you don't use the online version of T-Tax, my advice is to keep those older versions loaded on your machine for as long as the IRS or state taxing agency can look back. I don't know how that works w/ the online version.) Since only the reported withholding was affected, this took all of ten minutes to do. TurboTax, you do rock! Per the filing instructions, which I have in front of me, I was not allowed to e-file but had to print and *snail-mail* the amended return, along with a *copy* of the federal return for that year and the revised documents supporting the change. To my surprise, I had my refund, a mailed check, plu$ intere$t, back in less than three weeks. Though, it did happen to be late February, when I submitted the amended return. It seems e-filing is allowed solely for the current year's business.  So, my friend, have faith, and roll up your sleeves. Good luck!

So glad you were able to e-file your '23 return. Sorry, you're still having trouble with the other. To do my 2019 amendment, I had to use my 2019 edition of TurboTax. To compare apples and apples, 1) I just pulled up my 2022 TurboTax version, 2) selected my return, then 3) clicked the State Taxes tab. (I actually file taxes in two states, so compared how TurboTax treats both states to start this task to assure amending a return is accessed the same way for each one, at least for the desk-top version. They were.) I had a screen with two groupings of tasks, Other Situations, which take you to certain tasks sometimes encountered while completing your state return, and Other Forms, which include paying estimated quarterly taxes and filing for an extension. On of the choices in the latter group is an item labeled "Change a Previously Filed Tax Return (Amend)", which is what you want. 4) Click Start next to the Amend item, and you should be able to work through that. If you use the online TurboTax, I have no idea whether the online application is set up the same way as the desktop version, but it ought to be similar, at least. Hope you get it this time.

When I submit the amendment by e-file,I found I can't e-file state amendment only. As I select "Federal amended return",I have to select "E-file" or "Don't e-file my federal amended return now,I'll do it later".

Is that mean I couldn't do state amendment only?

Amendment

@18686 If you did not actually amend the state tax return in the State section of the program, there is no state amended return to file.  Just e-file the federal amended return.

Amendment

Thanks for your prompt reply.

I finished the state amendment. It's no problem to submit the amended state return by e-file.

I just wonder My federal return is not changed and I don't want to amend federal return, but it seems I have to do amendment both federal and state.Because when you "Select the return you're ready to e-file","Federal amended return" only provide 2 choices--"e-file" and "do not e-file my federal amended return now,I'll do it later."

I want to e-file my state amended return only.

Amendment

@18686 If the federal amended tax return is not being e-filed then the state amended return cannot be e-filed, it can only be printed and mailed to the state.

Amendment

Could you help me to check if I could e-file federal and state amended return? Although the federal return is unchanged.

Amendment

@18686 Well, I will have to admit to never trying to e-file an amended return that that was not changed from the original.

But, I see no reason why you cannot e-file the the federal amended return even if nothing changed so that would enable you to e-file the state tax return.
