Amending 2018 Tax Returns without filing 2019 yet

Hello,

My 2018 Taxes were rejected by the Fed and State. From my understanding since we are in the new tax year, I need to purchase a 2019 version of turbotax to download my 2018 .tax file.

However, I am not yet prepared to file my 2019 taxes. I am ok paying for the software to get my .tax file, but TurboTax seems to only allow payment (and then access to previous years .tax file at the time of filing current year)
I would appreciate any help or advisement.

Why are you amending a 2018 return that was rejected?  Amending is a special process you use ONLY if the return has been filed and fully processed but that needs some additional or corrected data.  A rejected return has never been filed.  You should not be clicking on anything that said "amend.'''

All you need to do is make some corrections and then print it and mail it.  You do not want to file a Form 1040X.

. If you have any changes/corrections at all to make to your 2018 return, you now have to complete it using desktop software, which you must download to a full PC or Mac  (not to a mobile device).

If you already paid for your online software you can ask customer support for a download of the desktop software.

They are available from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. Pacific time Monday-Friday.

If you are getting a refund, there is no penalty for filing late.  If you owe tax due, then file and pay the amount due as shown on the Form 1040, but expect a bill later from the IRS for the penalty and interest you will owe.  Only the IRS will calculate this—TurboTax will not calculate it.

Amending 2018 Tax Returns without filing 2019 yet

@Ldber1922 What software did you use to prepare and file 2018?  Why are you asking how to "change the year?"  If you just used the online program to prepare and e-file a 2018 return that was a big mistake.  Online is only for 2019--no other year.  If you used the online software and e-filed, the system is treating it like a 2019 return, and you have filed incorrectly on the the wrong tax year's forms.  Was the return accepted?  If you get lucky  and it rejects, then your mistake will be easier to fix.

If the return you e-filed using online recently is rejected, delete that 2018 data, and use the account for your 2019 return.  When you have deleted the 2018 income and put in your 2019 income instead, you can try to e-file it again.   You will need to use "zero" as your AGI in order to e-file.   If zero will not work, then you have to print, sign and mail the 2019 return.

If that incorrect return was accepted somehow, you have to wait for it to be processed and file an amended return later--that is more involved, so post back for further help if it is needed.

As for the correct way to file 2018:

Online preparation and e-filing for 2018 is permanently closed.

To file a return for a prior tax year

If you need to prepare a return for 2016, 2017, or 2018 you can purchase and download desktop software to do it, then print, sign,  and mail the return(s)

https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/past-years-products/

Remember to prepare your state return as well—if you live in a state that has a state income tax.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

Note:  The desktop software you need to prepare the prior year return must be installed/downloaded to a full PC or Mac.  It cannot be used on a mobile device.

If you are getting a refund, there is not a penalty for filing past the deadline.  If you owe taxes, the interest/penalties will be calculated by the IRS based on how much you owe and when they receive your return and payment. The IRS will bill you for this; it will not be calculated by TurboTax.
