Adjusting W4

I don’t know how to adjust my W4 now as it defaults to 1 for my single status.  I use to be able to adjust my withholding to get more back during the year instead of the end of year in my refund.

Please advise.  Thanks.

Adjusting W4

Hello cwats37!

The way the W-4 is formatted is difficult to adjust. The ways to do this is to:

  • add a dependent/a qualifying child, if you have one and that should decrease the amount withheld (Step 3), or
  • you are eligible for deductions other than the basic standard deduction, such as itemized deductions, the deduction for IRA contributions, or the deduction for student loan interest (Step 4(b)).

I hope this helps.
