I had the same strange experience. Turbotax 2019 and Turbotax 2020 would ask for the activation code if I had a flash drive plugged in. Once I took off the flash drive, no more requests to activate.
I put the cd in the optical drive when it arrived through (TT Advantage) and left the packaging on my desk where it was tossed into the trash by someone who isn't me. I've been a advantage member/subscriber for many years now so there ought to be a way to get the code replaced/replicated.
Time is running out on the for me, so PLEASE HELP!

There is the option to automatically update or ask. Check the drop-down menus and change it. Not hard.....
Get a real computer!! Mac-weenies we used to call them back in the day! Sorry, sarcasm comes natural. Hope you get it figured out..... Been a nightmare this year and last because Intuit uses a hardware footprint to identify your computer when you initially install the program. Any usb drives plugged/unplugged or, in my case a usb printer simply turned on, makes TT think it is a new computer. Windows abandoned this hardware footprinting years ago.......
ALWAYS save your original packaging for seven years, at least. I had a client who needed to amend back 5 years and had gone through 2 new computers so the initial loads of the different years' TT software was long gone. Luckily we had TT discs and packaging going back about 15 years!! Re-load the appropriate years on the new pc and BACK IN BUSINESS!!!

I respect protecting all intellectual property. I've been in software for 30 years. But honestly, I've never seen any modern software product ask me to RE-ENTER my license / activation key after an update. I installed the software two weeks ago and already did my mother-in-laws taxes last week and now I am doing mine. I am on vacation now. Turbo Tax just asked me to do an upgrade (I have no problem with updates -it's normal) and I said sure like I've always done. Now, it's asking to RE-ENTER the license code again? After it's already been installed, activated, and used on this computer? Seriously Intuit? I hope you have really good reason for this step. Don't you think this is ridiculous software development? I am away from home and don't carry the software packaging with me everywhere I go (Iike most software users). I encourage you to ask your own employees, product management, and QA team when was the last time they needed to RE-ENTER any software license key? I am a disappointed customer today. A user since 1996.
I activated the product using the activation code almost 2 months ago and have been using the software. Now it is asking for the activation code again, and I cannot find it.
Make sure your computer is the same way when you originally installed it. Like with no flash drives plugged in or plugged in if one was. It asked me again so I just closed the program and took out a flash drive that was plugged in and tried again. It worked. Or you may need to connect a flash drive or printer or something that was connected when you originally installed the program.
