How do we post miscellaneous income when no 1099-misc is to be supplied?
You'll need to sign in or create an account to connect with an expert.
If your miscellaneous income is not self-employment income, enter it as other reportable income. Follow these steps:
To check the entry, Preview your 1040. Other reportable income is reflected on Schedule 1, line 10.
If the income is from self employment (independent contractor) please see the following TurboTax FAQ: How do I report income from self-employment?
Why do you people keep posting these "expert" replies assuming we are using the on-line version of TT?
The question was for the downloaded version AND NO THEY ARE NOT THE SAME!!!!!!!!!! I have to conclude that Intluit is intending to do away with the download & CD versions next year. Nothing you responded with corresponds to the download version. The download version does not have an "add more income" entry. Furthermore, step-by-step for 1099-misc requires entries taken from that very form. Their is no selection for entering data not taken from the misc form. I could always fill it out guessing what goes in what box, I suppose.

Most TurboTax users, about 90%, are completing their tax return with the online editions. We have no way to know which edition that is being used if the user posting the question does not select their product when entering their question.
For the desktop editions -
On Other Reportable Income, click the start or update button
On the screen Any Other Taxable Income? Click on Yes
Enter the income description, the amount and Continue
This appears to work. Finally a respectable answer. Thanks much!
The choice of designating crypto mining as a hobby vs. business depends on a great many things.
These include time & effort spent, intent to make a profit, dependence on mining income, mining profitability, etc. In my case I use my computer part time for mining. It is not dedicated to mining.
If you are reporting the crypto mining as a business then you can deduct the business use portion of the computer. However, if this is hobby income, entered under Any Other Taxable Income as indicated by @DoninGA and @HelenC12, there is nothing you can deduct for the computer.
The proof of business use and personal use is the time spent on each and a log that provides proof for audit purposes. Keep this with your tax records if you decide to use self-employment income entry with the Form 1099-MISC and you decide to depreciate your computer.
Are you referring to the online or download versions of TT? They are NOT the same. However, I have listed my hobby income under "Less Common Income" >> "Miscellaneous Income" >> "Other reportable income". This seems to work fine until TT does a tax review. Then it insists I fill out Schedule "C" as a business. What is going on?

There is a separate entry for Hobby Income and Expenses in the Miscellaneous income section.
Thank you...I will try that.
I deleted my entries I entered in "other reportable income" and added them to "Hobby income..." .
All works well till the review. TT still insists I fill out Schedule "C"

See if there is a Schedule C in Forms and if so delete the Schedule C.
It looks like that solved the problem...thanks so much!
